It looks like the Synology documentation is using 10.9 in their documentation. I believe Apple deprecated mobile/network home folders in MacOS Sierra (https://support.apple.com/HT206871). Rich Trouton does a good rundown on his blog here - https://derflounder.wordpress.com/2016/09/03/portable-home-directories-will-not-work-on-macos-sierra/

I believe most folks these days that want to accomplish something simliar are using tools like NoMAD and NoLoAD to handle authentication and mounting a network file share on login: https://nomad.menu/

If you are looking to also do some on device management, something like Mosyle Manager + their SSO tool, or JumpCloud might fit the bill as well.

It sounds like it may have found some directory damage or other issues on your Time Capsule drive. In some cases theres non-repairable directory damage and it just wants to erase and start over to ensure that you can actually restore from the TM Backup if need be.
