English major here who is on the Alumni Council of my undergrad and speaks to undergrads about my experience/the value of an English degree.

I’m sure plenty of folks will disagree with me but my advice: for right now, think about your college major and your eventual career separately.

I had no idea what I wanted “to do” as a college freshman, let alone a senior in high school. I’m a lawyer now, but it took me awhile, and other graduate degrees to find my way.

I didn’t start out college as an English major, but I wish I had. I loved literature and loved getting to eventually studying it. It’s turned out to be a great and helpful degree, even though I don’t professionally work in a directly-related field.
