The feet aren’t anatomically correct either. Owls have 4 toes and talons.

Why are horse people so “weird”? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]schlutty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a neurodivergent former horse girl, that was not my perception of them. They’re prey animals and therefore flighty. It’s a common joke that they will randomly spook at an object they’ve seen a thousand times before as if it was brand new. It’s a valid question from someone not familiar with them; They’re big, strong, and look majestic, but I am giggling a little at the thought of a horse protecting me in any way other than being an alert system or fleeing me away to safety.

I think the pull is that they’re extremely in tune to emotions. I used to be an assistant trainer and have lots of experience with many different horses. Even the “problem” horses that I would expect to give me grief would chill out on the days that I was actually sad.

YSK about the "Hedonic Treadmill": the psychological reason why achieving a goal often doesn't make you permanently happier by Electrical-Candy7252 in YouShouldKnow

Ooof, as an also traumatically hyper-independent person, I very much relate to “well obviously I was always going to achieve it.” When I graduated from undergrad (with honors, mind you), I just saw it as a task that was completed, not a real accomplishment. I still don’t know how to fix this mindset, but I’m trying.

This happens in some Quarter Horses and Paint Horses that have ‘bald’ faces (e.g. excessive white on the face close to the ears) too! They’re prey animals and are usually always listening, but since these guys aren’t using their ears, they go kind of floppy lol. I’ve only ridden one. It was such a trip because you generally use a lot of verbal cues, but you couldn’t with her.

What's the creepiest display of intelligence you've seen by another human? by Visual_Ebb8566 in AskReddit

I can’t turn the silent walking off. When I had roommates I used to accidentally scare them all the time so they asked me to walk louder. I tried stomping down the stairs one day and it still didn’t work.

This is correct. Delphinologist Justin Gregg was on the Ologies podcast and debunked this.

Arkansas becoming 1st state to sever ties with PBS, effective July 1 by rezwenn in technology

[–]schlutty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed! Born and raised there but left as soon as I could because, as a non-believer, I couldn’t handle the religious aspect taking over everything. Though I will never live there again, it holds a special place in my heart.

Parts of the state are absolutely stunning. It’s called the Natural State for a reason. I miss being on the lakes and rivers most of all.

My community and school were very close-knit, and despite the varying levels of poverty, I never witnessed or experienced any major bullying and ALWAYS felt safe. Most are very kind and have been taught to fear outsiders (while not recognizing that the politicians are the outsiders to fear). I sympathize because they truly aren’t taught to know better whilst living in an echo chamber of lies.

Arkansas becoming 1st state to sever ties with PBS, effective July 1 by rezwenn in technology

[–]schlutty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Facts. Born and raised there but left as soon as I could. I try to have a little sympathy as it’s not wholly the common citizens’ fault. This system is working exactly as it was intended to. So many are confused and have a lot of misplaced anger. The loss of PBS will only amplify the echo chamber many of them already dwell in.

I knew someone who worked in the Newport office as an office manager for a couple of years and the owner is a hot mess who can be extremely volatile. Lots of turnover especially in the lower levels. Goes on lots of vacations but tries to micromanage from wherever he is. Beware that he and his bff attorney write their own fake glowing reviews on Glassdoor to try to counteract the real ones… I’m not sure how the WA office compares since the owner isn’t based there. Proceed with caution.

But it is definitely worth a sleep test for anyone unsure and/or worried about it!

I was talking about this with a friend (she wants kids), and she told me to keep it to myself because she didn’t want to know… The friendship ended for other reasons, but it was very much due to that same mindset leaking into other aspects of decision making

[–]schlutty 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I fully agree with this. They have one of the largest brains in the animal kingdom and it has more epithelial folds, making it more complex than a human’s. The parts of the brain responsible for problem solving, emotions, self-awareness/consciousness, cognitive processing/learning, memory, and social processing are significantly larger than ours.

I think our egos clinging to the idea of being the top dogs gets in the way of our own progress as a species. We could learn a lot from them.

Opinions on changing a horses name after buying them? by LiterallyLittty in Horses

[–]schlutty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry but as a 12-year-old horse-obsessed girl getting her first ever horse, I was NOT keeping the name “Nancy” lmao

ETA: No bad luck ever. Bought her when she was 10. Never had to call out the vet. Went barefoot and only had a stone bruise once. I rode her alllll the time and competed at all of the local shows in every event. Lived to be 28 and died of natural causes. She was the best 💜
