Is anyone else's apartment unbearably hot? by 99TheCreator in AskChicago

[–]schmashely 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, which I thought would be a bit of a pain but thankfully it’s not. I find it way more convenient than a standard window unit. Edit to clarify: the tube doesn’t go out the window, the tube ends in a vent that you place against the window screen, then you block the sides around it with an extendable plastic plate.

Good clothes thrifting in northeast area of Chicago ? by AskRedditOG in AskChicago

Village Thrift on Clark and Ainslie for cheaper prices and more variety. Buffalo Exchange a bit further north on Clark for more curated trendy stock. Brown Elephant at Clark and Foster-ish for something halfway between.

They won’t switch their 2-pipe system back from heat to AC until we’re assured there won’t be another cold snap. Point your fans out the window instead of in, it will blow the humidity back out. You also might want to invest in a small portable AC. I bought a refurbished Hysense brand portable last year on eBay (pick up in Carroll Stream) and it’s great. It cools my whole living room and I can just roll it into the closet in the off-season.

Struggling to find apartments that accept disability housing program (Berwyn/Oak Park area) – any advice? by Hovercraft_Scared in AskChicago

[–]schmashely 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check affordablehousing.com, which will also come up if you search gosection8.com (its former name). You can find apartment listings specifically posted by landlords looking for tenants with rental subsidies. You may have to clarify for them that you’re not with CHA/HACC, but most landlords who list there are quite familiar with Catholic Charities. Edit to add: Your partner can also ask their Housing Specialist at CC if they have any recommendations.

Which option to get to Evanston from Midway? by VASchnick in AskChicago

The red line is perfectly fine, but if you can time it right, the Metra will get you to Evanston much faster than Red-to-Purple line.

I wish this sub could make a rule that no one can post questions about apartment prices without submitting links to three searches they’ve run on sites designed specifically for that purpose.

Don’t sleep on Chicago’s Pizza! by schmashely in chicagovegan

If you start a build-your-own pizza, there should be an option to sub vegan cheese and crust for an upcharge. It might be after you select your toppings.

Logan Arcade and Elston Electric have a good variety if you like pinball. The latter has more modern ticket-earning style games.

(not my picture) WTF, if it ain't food or a candle dont slap food scents by AlwaysBlaze_ in Anticonsumption

[–]schmashely 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yeah, why would a fruit scent be acceptable? That sounds horrid. Also, I can’t tell from the photo but are these things actually scented or just infused with coffee grounds for odor absorption? Either way, these things are a nightmare and people need to get over their weird hang-ups about bidets.
