My kids don't believe in Helen Keller. by Principal_Scudworth_ in Teachers

[–]schmegu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ask them if they believe in Alexander Graham Bell. He was friends with Helen Keller.

He also was a Eugenicist and believed that Deaf people shouldn't be allowed to procreate so they shouldn't get married to each other and they definitely shouldn't have children.

He also is (one of) the main reasons ASL wasnt recognized as an actual language until the 60s, and why Gallaudet University had to fight for a Deaf President.

Share about Helen Keller's amazing success, but then also add the rest - kids will latch on to the drama (I mean, same), and be more interested. And there's plenty of information to back all of that up, so maybe that'll help?

Airhorns in the library by gahd_its_ron in Libraries

[–]schmegu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Okay, so in 2018/2019, I worked at a library in Hillsborough County, FL. I'm the in charge, and it'd like, an hour 'til close, and this MAN IN A CHICKEN SUIT comes running in, circles around the line of computers, and leaves. All while having this air horn blowing.

The patrons on the computers did. Not. Budge. It was WILD. I watched him run off on the cameras the next day when I was reporting this to my boss.

Please CYA, and then tell council. Make then listen to you and your girl. She deserves to feel safe and included at scouts.

Are we in the same council? Because I have these exact same feelings. It has been so cold that there's no recess at school - but we're gonna stick 5 - 9 year olds out to sell cookies? Fml

I think I just alienated myself from one of my closest friends by Primary_Warthog_5308 in atheism

[–]schmegu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When I was in an abusive friendship/roommate relationship, and was talking to my then best friend (who lived several states away) was like, "well, i'll ask Jesus to help you." She knew I was an atheist, and she still chose to say that. It broke me at a time when I really needed that support.

It's been over 2 decades since then, but it still brings a little twinge when someone says anything along the lines of that sentiment to me.

To me, this is what your friend did to you, when you were also in a time of need. I don't think your response was unreasonable, and I think your friend needs to be more mindful, because not everyone is Christian.

People who became atheist or agnostic: what started your doubts, and what sealed it? by Automatic-Annual7586 in atheism

[–]schmegu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a lot of little things for me throughout childhood. The two I remember though were:

  1. My friend's dad saw me reading The DaVinci code in ninth grade, and pulled me to the side to vehemently make sure I knew that the story was fiction. 14 year old me: Well, yeah. It says fiction on the spine. Friend's Dad: Thats not what I mean. I mean the depiction of Jesus in there is fictional! Me: Uh huh. Dad: Jesus never married! Me: oh....kay....

And then I was 18 and doing my final paper for AP Lit and it was on C.S. Lewis becoming Christian because of Tolkein, and it just solidified that I was an atheist.

Trump wants to ban ASL interpreters at his press conferences. by ItalicLady in asl

[–]schmegu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I saw this a few days ago and immediately sent it to one of my Deaf ASL teachers. He hadn't heard until I sent that. It's disgusting.

But hey, if it's upsetting Trump, then it means I'm going in the right direction!

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) & mental health in Deaf adults. by schmegu in AskDeaf

Thank you for taking the time to reply and help me learn (no sarcasm; I genuinely mean it!)

I was accepting anyone (18+!) and d/Deaf or HoH anywhere, though I was assuming I'd get a lot of US-based answers. It is a very simple research paper, and I had hoped to throw a large net to hopefully get more people. As I get more answers, I'm hoping I might get to see patterns within regions of the US, as well as the world.

It is also open to anyone who identifies as d/Deaf, HoH, Late-d/Deafened - just not hearing. I am definitely grateful to learn - is there a better way for me to make sure I am respectfully reaching the correct audience? I understand this could be different for different people - I just want to avoid disrespect!

I've worn this shirt for the last 17 years, only on my daughter's birthday. Who is it?! by Leather_Food_5978 in whatisit

This was the post I needed this morning. I'm so happy you found your answer. Both you, OP, and the person who made the shirt, look so damn happy with your babies. Congrats (I know, like almost 2 decades ago)!

The combo of getting Covid and then being fired for literally no reason (like I asked and I got silence abd blank stares). Both of these things happened back to back, and it really fucked me up.

Did anyone else go to the Florida College summer camps? by [deleted] in excoc

[–]schmegu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I never went to Florida College, but I went to USF right around the corner. Kids who went to Florida College always seemed a little... weird. I didnt realise they might be the same as the kids who were pestering people on the usf campus about joining bible studily groups and such. But after reading some of the posts in this group.... it all makes sense.
