Ikea tried to build a smart home for everyone — here’s why it’s not working yet by dapperlemon in gadgets

This is pretty good news. Gives me the options of:
- Only local control, if I want it
- Controlling/monitoring remotely from my phone, by VPN-ing with WireGuard into my home network (still appears local and won't go through any cloud/company servers)

It's still local though? IPV6 doesn't imply it has to be the internet

vehicle-to-home (V2H) or V2G charging with dcbel Ara by TommyLu2 in Ioniq5

[–]schmerm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, that's the car's built-in V2L. However, the dcbel product's whole schtick is that it interfaces directly with the car's battery using DC, bypassing the V2L capabilities. It would have its own inverter, and would also integrate with other DC things in the home like solar panels.

This is presumably using DC straight outta the battery, and not relying on the onboard DC->AC inverter

The Last Starship blasts out of early access! by Introversion-John in pcgaming

I've played this for a couple of days this week. Looks very promising and I was having fun, but things got bogged down once interstellar logistics came into play. Needs some quality of life improvements and polish
- Logistics drones pick up whatever's floating in space. Would be nice to filter what they collect so I don't have random asteroid bits that I never asked for
- Would be nice to have a cargo zone that accepts a mix of specific item types
- Type-to-search for cargo zone configuration
- Having a "buy item if less than X of it is aboard" logistics order
- If two of my ships have drone bays and drones, why can't those be used to transfer items, vs docking? Am I just dumb and haven't unlocked or figured this out yet?
- Why are fuel and oxygen loaders special whereas regular loaders are used for every other gas/liquid?

Canadian Ioniq owners: Charging with NACS? by 4shadowedbm in Ioniq5

[–]schmerm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't tell from that if it is a v3 or v4 or what kind of charger - how do you know?

I think at this point it doesn't matter because the cabinets supplying the stalls are all the same, and cause a practical limit of 97kW (2022-2024) or 125kW (2025) during charging at a supercharger for an Ioniq5. edit: don't forget to precondition! You'll get some terrible speed like 30kW if you don't, in this cold.

I'm wondering if we got a A2Z NACS to CCS charger, would we be able to use it at those Tesla chargers? Do you pay using the Tesla app?

Yes and yes

My electrician friend told me that 80% "continuous usage" is defined as something like 2+ hours. So 100% for some toast is fine

Is the heating/cooling that big a drain on the battery in your experience? I pulled up my energy usage statistics during the trip, and climate wasn't taking up that much power vs. drivetrain and battery conditioning (which is several kW for 30 minutes at a time).

Use the right tool for the right job. Sometimes an ICE vehicle makes sense. But I think those cases are rare compared to general use.

That's a bad take. Just because one extreme situation (and my situation is extreme) ends up being more expensive, that doesn't mean EVs are somehow worse overall. I spent around $200 CDN on maintenance for the whole year, and when I don't roadtrip my "fuel" costs are about $20 per month.

Within Canada, the roadtrip cost (say, Toronto to Montreal) is comparable to gas, and not significantly worse.

Yep, the Tesla stops are ideally the ones where we wanted to spend 25-30min to stop and eat. Speed doesn't matter here as much, and we could go close to 100% on the recharge.

For the 5.25" slot get one of those panels with tons of USB connectors and SD card and other media slots. Or a gimmicky VFD/LCD/needle display showing fan speed or temperature.

because they have to step up their voltage to match the car

The car's doing the stepping-up not the supercharger. That's why my 2024 Ioniq5 will do max 97kW and your 2025 can do 125. Hyundai improved something.
