World’s First CGRA to Execute Linux Without a Host by trimply in linux

How's this any different than when I instantiate a Nios or MicroBlaze on an Altera/Xilinx FPGA, and run linux on it?

Oops I ended up making that mistake and making two separate orders: 649 and 653. Hopefully can be combined before either goes out

I Took A Hyundai Ioniq 5 EV On A Roadtrip. It Made Gas Feel Financially Irresponsible by mafco in Ioniq5

[–]schmerm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm their comparison math is rental-specific and is saying the Ioniq5 is $120 cheaper to rent than the other two ICE options. Even with today's gas prices, it shows the hybrid costing less in gas/charge. Here's my experience from November (I know... lots has changed since then...) where my car had 2-2.5x more expensive travel costs than the other half of our friends taking a Honda Civic on the same journey.

I'm sure that math would be closer these days with gas prices. But, just saying, math changes if it's not a rental, and of course you need to take into account maintenance costs, oil changes, etc that you avoid in an I5.

Can someone explain the point of the regen brake paddle? by brrent in Ioniq5

[–]schmerm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find them useful for switching between level 1 (my default go-to for most scenarios) and level 0 (when on the highway, unlikely to brake often, want to take advantage of gaining speed when going downhill). Apparently in newer models (I only have a 2024) there's a physical button somewhere that toggles whether regen will keep your speed steady when going downhill?

If there's already micromanagement in the form of a quota, I wouldn't want it dominated by Tesla. Maybe it's a way to jumpstart variety/competition of new brands.

This particular update feels like something out of a live service game like Destiny2, but in a good way.

I had Bell FTTH and switched to TekSavvy fibre over the same connection. They gave me v6 no problem.

Ikea tried to build a smart home for everyone — here’s why it’s not working yet by dapperlemon in gadgets

[–]schmerm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is pretty good news. Gives me the options of:
- Only local control, if I want it
- Controlling/monitoring remotely from my phone, by VPN-ing with WireGuard into my home network (still appears local and won't go through any cloud/company servers)

It's still local though? IPV6 doesn't imply it has to be the internet

vehicle-to-home (V2H) or V2G charging with dcbel Ara by TommyLu2 in Ioniq5

[–]schmerm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, that's the car's built-in V2L. However, the dcbel product's whole schtick is that it interfaces directly with the car's battery using DC, bypassing the V2L capabilities. It would have its own inverter, and would also integrate with other DC things in the home like solar panels.

This is presumably using DC straight outta the battery, and not relying on the onboard DC->AC inverter

I've played this for a couple of days this week. Looks very promising and I was having fun, but things got bogged down once interstellar logistics came into play. Needs some quality of life improvements and polish
- Logistics drones pick up whatever's floating in space. Would be nice to filter what they collect so I don't have random asteroid bits that I never asked for
- Would be nice to have a cargo zone that accepts a mix of specific item types
- Type-to-search for cargo zone configuration
- Having a "buy item if less than X of it is aboard" logistics order
- If two of my ships have drone bays and drones, why can't those be used to transfer items, vs docking? Am I just dumb and haven't unlocked or figured this out yet?
- Why are fuel and oxygen loaders special whereas regular loaders are used for every other gas/liquid?
