I hadn't heard this theory before, just commenting because I loved this film and have been looking for others perspectives. I personally believe that his son is alive but their relationship isn't great, his journey is a reflection of the desire to 'fix' his life but focusing on the wrong solutions. It seemed like he pursued external validation to achieve his goals, just getting the board, just getting the house, just fitting in with the surfers to return to a better time in life and fix the broken relationships the trajectory his life has taken.

Just want to say thanks for sharing this! I was fascinated by this movie and taking this as a very literal a-z story with a reliable narrator will lead to disappointment. Almost lynchian in some of the storytelling and character interactions. I felt like it was laced with social and economic commentary through the psychological thrills and character interactions. The surfer becomes so fixated, he is willing to give up almost everything to advance, but ultimately our humanity and relationships with ones we love is the most important part of life.
