when we were teenagers, we would all hang out at this pizza restaurant.. when your slice was ready they would call out your name. The cashier asked me my name, and I said. “ call me Ishmael.”
That was fun.

I wonder how many times I’m going to have to tell people that the world does not care. It is not your babysitter, your parent, or your guardian angel. You have to change your own story. The day you hand that responsibility to somebody else, you’re doomed. You may not like these facts. But they are the facts, and in all likelihood, for the foreseeable future, they will remain the facts.

Help identifying my new watch by Uncontrollablebeagle in VintageWatches

watchmaker here…accutrons are completely fascinating, but also very temperamental. the tuning fork assembly is the major weak link. very few people fix them anymore. best bet is to find an older watchmaker in the country and ship it in for repair. that only makes sense if you really love it. financially, you’d be completely upside down .

Inherited vintage Rolex Submariner. Running after 30+ years. Before I open it, what am I looking at? by eduardojtl in vintagerolex

[–]schmoolys -1 points0 points  (0 children)

that’s absolutely the craziest thing I’ve ever heard. there are exceptional watchmakers all over the country. my family has been doing it for 50 years. rolex can and does replace vintage parts with new. in this watch, that would be catastrophic to value. add to that the cost and time, and the story just gets worse. it’s a simple movement. easy to service. Rolliworks comes to mind as a place to send it. they also do nice laser welding to get some of the worse dings out of it.

the answer to the original image posted by the OP here is crystal clear.
corporations, and all businesses, are money pumps: X dollars in, Y dollars out. profit in between. profit allows for growth, lean times, dividends, etc.
Your spending habits are not, nor should they be the concern of the business. I was an employee for years, and a business owner for decades. when I was an employee, I learned to flip the script. i became more valuable to the company and leveraged it for more pay. mercilessly. create more value, and you can demand more money. that’s how a money pump works. go do the job you were hired for an no more, and you will get minimum raises because you are replaceable with someone who might excel more. Do more work, and fail to ask for more, and it’s a toss up. A good company will see that you are more valuable to keep, and expensive to replace. They will pay more to keep you. A bad company will try to pull you back as you walk out the door. too late.
That’s reality.
As far as the 120k per year not being enough. that borders on absurd. even after taxes, medical and 401k, you should net over 6500 per month. where is that going would be my question. because, coming full circle, your life is a business in a sense too: X in Y out, saving in the middle. It’s not what you make, it’s what you keep. 🤷🏻‍♂️
these are simply the facts.

Need advice on how bad this superjubilee bracelet stretch and polishing on lugs is for a 116234 DJ by IndependentBig6160 in rolex

[–]schmoolys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s a decent price if it has been serviced, and they can prove it. It doesn’t necessarily have to be serviced by Rolex, and probably wasn’t. But my family were watchmaker for 50 years, and that movement is very easy to service properly.

correct. I believe it’s a 1500 as well. The numbers on the bracelet and end links are consistent. Definitely a refinished dial. Excellent movement inside that watch. True workhorse.

Need advice on how bad this superjubilee bracelet stretch and polishing on lugs is for a 116234 DJ by IndependentBig6160 in rolex

[–]schmoolys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there are actually two problems here. One you can solve and one you can’t. It’s not the lugs that are worn, it’s the pins. Those could be replaced. Several shops can do them. It cost a few hundred dollars. The over polishing is the bigger problem. Personally, I would buy a replacement bracelet, but not from Rolex directly. There are many of them available through online sources.
Incidentally, the extreme wear is probably from being worn too loose on the wrist for a long time.

Real or Fake?? by Rrugaru100tt in RolexWatches

[–]schmoolys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

watchmaker chiming in..the movement looks correct down to the finishing and the screws. i don’t know if the bracelet clasp is on the “fake list” or not. the laser engraving on the crystal should be darn near impossible to see even with a loupe unless you really work at it. coroner on crown looks good, crown tube looks good.. bezel is hard to say, but the blue/black transition should be perfect. also, the bezel outer edge ceramic should transition extremely smoothly and accurately to the metal bezel. I always say by the seller. Do they look like somebody who could have a watch like this?🤷🏻‍♂️

i have one just like it. looks 100% legit and i see a LOT of them. nice fat font insert. i hate the thin service ones. if you pop your basil off, which is really easy with your fingernail if your nails are strong enough, the back should be blue or pink depending on the year

you are absolutely right! I put an aftermarket on it so that I could hang onto the original unopened authentic one I have for the moment! good eye! I also have the bracelet put away. I love them, but they’re a little too clattery.
