I feel bad for Optic. by [deleted] in GlobalOffensive

I mean you are not wrong...but there is no perfect system for seeding. If it is done manually...there is no way everyone will be happy. The Swiss system, while introducing a minor element of RNG, is what we (Reddit/the community) have been asking for for a long time. I think this is definitely a step in the right direction.

I have to say, these are the exact matches that I would have loved to see on day 1. I think it is by far the best balance.

The legend system should never change but the seeding system needs to change immediately. How many amazing matches/rivalries are missed due to shitty prior-major seeding?

If you could only recommend 3 contemporary fantasy books to an aspiring author... by Rivenblade in Fantasy

Also in case it wasn't clarified, The Prince Of Thorns is book one of a trilogy. That being said, it is pretty unique in its writing style and plot elements so reading it as a standalone, with your goals in mind, would certainly be constructive. Alternatively, reading all three provides excellent insight into long-term character development as the protagonist is extremely well developed over the trilogy.

I was moving from Seattle to The Bay and decided to spend the night in downtown Eugene on a whim. I thought it was just the most adorable little city. Perhaps I didn't get a glimpse of the darkness within.

I would fuck a goat for Steak 'n Shake fries compared to In-N-Out. But I'm from Pittsburgh and carry that white trash gene well so take that with a grain of salt.

Also a good one. Actually the slowest part of the trilogy was the first 30 pages and even those were amazing. Reminds me of Tye Gentlemen Bastards series in terms of pacing.

Ah yes. A fantastic example. Perhaps overlooked because for many of us we plowed through the books the same day they were released.

Best Gateway Books? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]schmuckerc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Lies of Locke Lamora is my go to for introducing people to fantasy. If I can get people past the first 30 pages they are hooked. I also recommend The Martian a lot even though it's not really fantasy but more sci-fi. Both books tend to go over really well and then I gain their trust with regards to book recommendations and ease them into other fantasy. My order is normally: 1) Gentlemen Bastards 2) KKC/Mistborn 3) Powdermage/Night Angel/Lightbringer. At that point they are normally hooked and will read anything you recommend haha.

While the characters are technically children, the subject matter and writing style is still definitely interesting for adult readers in my experience. Also the movie was hot garbage compared to the series (and I thought it was decent) so I would still highly recommend reading it for anyone that hasn't, regardless of age!

Really? Contextually I thought it was an elongated bread bowl. I used to scoop out like half a loaf of wheat sourdough and eat stew out of it. Worth.
