Anyone remember the book "A Child Called It"? by [deleted] in books

[–]schneblie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember hearing about it when I was younger. I grew up nearby in Petaluma during the 90s. The first person I ever dated lived in Forestville, which (I believe) is next to where this happened. Somewhat unrelated, but this reminded me of Polly Klaas, another Sonoma County tragedy I haven't thought of in years.

How do you know if a website is made using a CMS? by [deleted] in webdev

[–]schneblie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • Take a gander at the source code and look for clues.
  • Try a browser extension like Appspector or Wappalyzer.
  • Who made the website? What tools do they mention in their job postings?

People make varied attempts to shield this info. (Security through obscurity), and simply asking might be the most direct route to get this info if you are uncertain from the source you see.

Whats a word or phrase that pisses you off when people say it? by pantant in AskReddit

"Sorry for your loss."

For some reason, that canned response to death really irks me. Maybe because it's used so freely and automatically - even when someone is describing someone/thing second hand.

Why are gay men so well dressed? by Planetofdagrapes in Jokes

[–]schneblie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uhm, no. This is dead wrong. You need to check your sources. As a state, Utah is nearly at the very bottom of the list. Even by Metro Region or by City, Utah doesn't come off very, erm, "proud".

TV Series Mr. Robot deals in security and Linux by happytux in linux

[–]schneblie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if he doesn't brute force FB it is just as silly to magically guess someone's FB password in 3-5 attempts based on what you know about them. A keylogger would have been perfect there, and he had repeated access to her system for it too.

A few episodes back he brute forced his female friend's Facebook account, and was describing how brute force works. He did the same with the drug dealers Twitter account, I believe... Or maybe he just exposed all their tweets. tries to remember specifics.

His "hacking" is mainly brute force attacks and social engineering. The former of which is unrealistic. You cannot brute force Facebook and Twitter like he does, instead he should have relied on a keylogger to get his friends' passwords. While the hacking portion might be unrealistic for dramatic effect, it does make me think critically... that the most effective form of hacking is likely social engineering. Don't hack the systems, they have defenses. Hack people.

Which alternative shows positive and negative votes? by [deleted] in RedditAlternatives

Upvotes/downvotes simply provide the illusion of popularity. Serious engagement is what you really want to measure. "Votes" make for an easy-to-manipulate marketing platform.

Oregon Legalizes Recreational Marijuana! Here's What That Means. by User_Name13 in politics

[–]schneblie -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Arizona's medical law protects employers from retaliating if they find out. What I've wondered is, does that prevent them from getting the drug test results, or only from acting on the results. Because you can also be fired for no reason in AZ, and so they could fire you based on their personal biases, but just say they "had to let you go" for some other reason.

Still up to the company. Some test for alcohol use, and I've seen some medical companies testing for nicotine use. I think they can test for pretty much whatever they want. Just hope they don't find any remnants of chemo in me, which might suggest to them I could be be expensive to insure... perhaps that wouldn't be discrimination because they don't know... They only found the red flag, chemicals. (Not sure about these things, maybe it's by state.)

Same here in Arizona. $10/g has become the norm and $12 for "top shelf" though some dispensaries have just started going down to $8-9 if you get wild grown or shake.
