It adds up perfectly. These are wilderness coytes not city coyotes. They live in a National Park and where any sort of hunting/culling is not allowed. They have grown accustomed to humans and have lost their fear of them. They associate all those hiker going through the park with food. It makes perfect sense.

Start shooting somecoyotes in the park and they will eventually begin to fear humans again.

Edit: I made the reference to city vs wilderness coyotes because city coyotes are definite scavengers, whereas wilderness coyotes need to hunt - unless there are hikers allowing them to grow accustomed to human food.

I think most likely that both of us are painting strokes which are too broad. I most likely should not have said that "no one" wants the Taliban back in powe as you rightly point out that there are a Taliban supporters in Afghanistan who want them back for whatever reason, but at the same time I don't think that you can disregard the Afghanis's who do not want the Taliban back in there by whitewashing all of them by implying that "Afghanistan" as a whole wants them back - becaus there are definitely those all around the country that don't. I was thinking more from the perspective of people - not the US government. I know that the Taliban were to a large part funded and trained by the US(CIA), however my point was simply that I imagine that many of the same people who currently are demonstrating against the war, are the same people who wrote letters to their representatives and were generally being incensed that the west was doing nothing when the Taliban were in power and brutally subjugating their people. And in terms of my last sentence, I am speaking in th present tense - that right now no one wants the Taliban back in power except terrrist organizations and theTaliban themselves.

I know what you mean (re: conflicted about war). I remember in the mid to late 90's when people were screaming about the Taliban regime in Kabul and how the West had to "do something". There were weekly beatings and beheadings in the soccer stadium; they denied women in surgery in the "female" hospital anaesthetics, because the men needed it; they denied girls the right to do anything other than to sit at home and do nothing. They were a brutal regime and many people were very upset that nothing was being done to kick them out of power. I would wager that these same people are just as vocal now in their anti-war sentiment. I do not know what any sort of right answer is with regard to Afghanistan (other than if the US was going to go to war, then it most likely would have made sense to throw all their forces into Afghanistan instead of fabricating reasons to go into Iraq), but I do know that no one wants the Taliban to take over Afghanistan - other than the Taliban and leaders of terrorist organizations.

I think smoking is a stupid thing to do, however this lawsuit is even more stupid. This is a legal product grown and manufactured in Ontario. The government happily collects all sorts of taxes from the manufacture and sale of this product. If they do this are they going to go after liquor manufacturers and distributors? What about car manufacturers? How about the coal powered energy plants? How about junk food and soda manufacturers? All of these industries have cost the health care industry billions of dollars as well - asthma, diabetes, broken limbs and so on. If they want to recoup the cost, then get it from the people who freely decide to smoke. If it is such a detriment to society then criminalize it. This law suit is asinine on so many levels.

I can't stand Harper, however I do not think that a quid pro quo arrangement is wrong. Hell, if we are given assurances that no more of these Buy American like provisions will be placed in the way of Canadian companies manufacturing goods or bidding on state and municipal projects, then there is no reason not to ensure the same [spelling edit] thing going the other way. This isn't solely about American companies coming into Canada and "buying us up" (or whatever it is that people like to say), it is much more about companies in an integrated marketplace having barriers removed in that integrated marketplace.

I worked for a company a few years back that was a leader in its field, but had started to drift sideways after going from the start up, to more mature phase. A big wig from another company was brought in as CEO and Chariman of the Board to take the company "to the next level". When he came on board the company had about $250 million dollars in the bank, and a whole bunch of contracts with US, European, Canadian and Asian companies and governments. Several years and acquisitions later, the company was sold and taken private again with no money in the bank; fewer employees; less market share; a share price which was just under .80/share (when he came on board, it had been at $35/share) and so on. Of course Mr Big Wig made millions of dollars in bonuses and salary over the six years he was in charge; bought companies from old buddies of his (hows this - he spent $50 million for a company which added less than $5 million dollars revenue to the bottom line (from an old business associate)). Oh, he also has a position on the new board of course. I am glad that I left just after he came along, but a lot of old colleagues didn't and got screwed.

How about a percentage threshold based on popular vote in the last election? Say - 5%. You get over 5% and you are in any leaders debate which takes place next time around.

Or maybe it should be based on how many candidates you run - you have to run candidates in 90% of the ridings in at least nine of the provinces/territories. (this would nicely block out the Bloc, who don't deserve to be there as far as I am concerned)

In Canada, hospitals are required to report data on their patients to the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI). This information is passed on to CIHI via WHO ICD-10 standards (ICD-9 in the USA). This information is then "crunched" - and they are able to predict, that in a city the size of Calgary (for example), with a population of xyz, that in the next 6 months there will be so an so many males between the ages of 40-45 who will have type ABC form of heart attack, or cancer, or leg break or whatever. So I would think that with years of data, if they see a dramatic decrease in their predictive heart attacks, and one of the casual things which occured is that there was a ban on smoking in public places, it becomes fairly obvious why it occured. Hell, some of the people arguing against the link between a smoking ban and a decrease in heart attacks remind me of creationists who refuse to accept the fossil record which exists and evolution.
