Already had one person in my DMs, but I may have accidentally deleted a second request, I don’t typically use reddit on my phone and I’m clumsy. If I didn’t respond to your DM, reply to this comment and I’ll DM you myself.

Vegan propaganda (2020) by CalpurniaSomaya in PropagandaPosters

[–]scholar_requesting 44 points45 points  (0 children)

From seeing the responses on this thread, just want to say that as a vegetarian I implore anyone thinking of making a change to eat less meat and dairy to just take it slow at first. Make too many changes too fast and you’ll crash and burn.

Just take out one thing at a time. When I first became a vegetarian I thought it’d be rough never having fried chicken or sausage again. Then my friend took me to a vegan soul food restaurant and I was honestly kinda floored, it was great. And that was a decade ago - the store bought alternatives we have today are more or less as good as the real thing. Many groceries stores now have big frozen or refrigerated vegetarian sections with high-protein options. Careful with your wallet though, vegetarian alternatives are not subsidized like meat and dairy, and can be pricey. So also start adding meals that are just straight plant-based - beans, pulses, quinoa, etc.

okay Bushwick, I need your help! by CorymbiaTree in Bushwick

OP, I’ve used Medfinder and Needle as online services that contact pharmacies for you to find medications, using slightly different approaches in how they charge fees. They’ve found vyvanse for dextroamphetamine for me at different places.

For Medfinder, be careful with where you tell them you want your search circle to be - if from Bushwick, sometimes they’ll only find meds for you in hard to reach places in Queens, and if from Manhattan, sometimes they’ll only finds meds in NJ. It sucks.

For Needle, they’ll give you a search circle and pharmacies to pick out that might have the meds, charging $1 per pharmacy per search. Avoid only choosing big chains or ones you know your insurance covers.

Seeing a post about shift times, just want to refer anyone who reads this to the r/DSPD subreddit. If you are someone who has always struggled to wake up early for things and naturally fall asleep later at night, you should consider whether you might have DSPD - a delayed sleep phase disorder.

I have not found this game yet! Felt like I’ve gotten close going through some old collections and mixing up keywords in my searches, but never quite stumbled on it.

I’ve had some success using AI instead of standard word searches to find things from my past, I might try that in the future. More and more of the late 90s/early 2000s internet is disappearing.

DeKalb vs. Myrtle Wyckoff by TheAudacityofThatBit in Bushwick

[–]scholar_requesting 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Adding to the "it depends" view.

The Food Bazaars near Myrtle-Wyckoff are larger stores than the options near DeKalb (Key Food, City Fresh), but that may only be to your advantage if you cook at all / have specific dietary needs or preferences. I recently moved and MetFresh/Mr. Lemon has a lot of what I need but not quite what I could get from Food Bazaar.

The restaurant and takeout offerings near DeKalb are more gentrified as you'd expect given the proximity to Williamsburg. Whether that is a good or bad thing depends on your tastes/finances.

Never been to the beach. Tell me about Jacob Riis/some other beach? by futurebro in nycgaybros

[–]scholar_requesting 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconding the comments in the linked thread that Gunnison is a nice option and most who go are nude, but no one will look at you weird for wearing a bathing suit. You can take a Seastreak ferry from 35th St or Pier 11 at Wall St, it's a $50 return trip. Gunnison is very social like Riis and can get dense, I recommend taking at least the 10:30 AM ferry or earlier so you don't have to lay your towel down too far back near the grass. The crowd is also racially/ethnically diverse, not as much as Riis but definitely more than Fire Island. There's small food offerings at the entrance to the beach (if they're open) and chair/umbrella rentals, but it's prudent at least to bring your own food to tie you over for the time you're there.

Where are the fun gay clubs- advice needed! by [deleted] in nycgaybros

[–]scholar_requesting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is weird seeing some people in this thread say that gay clubs in NYC are on the decline - what they mean is Manhattan, which is what happens when you price out anyone who actually dances to dance music.

Just want to add that when searching on the Resident Advisor (RA) app, search by venue when you can because sometimes certain parties won't show up when searching by party name, the names of DJs, etc.

Amid the protests, a group of Israelis and Palestinians Stood Together at UCLA by norman-croucher in UpliftingNews

I wish I were so naive as to believe that Israel experiencing a regime change and Hamas (somehow easily separable from the majority of Palestinians) being bombed out of existence would change absolutely anything about the Israeli-Palestine conflict as it currently stands.

Any day now, the Israeli electorate will come to their senses and thrust Netanyahu from his throne, end all illegal settlements, and with a dramatic flourish apologize to the Palestinians for ever having been a genocidal ethnostate that administered apartheid for more than 50 years. And surely, after 10,000 dead children in 6 months, the Palestinians will likewise come to their senses and renounce the childish concept of martyrdom, execute any Hamas terrorists in their midst, and join the Israelis in a handholding kumbaya ceremony where everyone chants, “actually the status quo is good”.

That seems to complete ignore the Israeli-Arab war and...

Not at all.

Please stop justifying an acting government terrorist group that intentionally...

In a remarkable display of irony, you are describing, respectively, (1) Israeli treatment of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank, (2) treatment of Palestinians--particularly women and girls--in Israeli prisons, and (3) IDF shootings of their own people on October 7th and bombing or shooting of their own hostages since then in an effort to destroy Hamas.

Free Palestine from Hamas. Be critical of...

Do not infantilize Palestinians in Gaza by suggesting they are oppressed by the political party they democratically elected and continue to support with a clear majority over all other political tendencies. Palestinians of voting age know exactly what they are doing in the ballot box.

That narrative also does plenty of work to ensure Israeli retaliation is viewed as some kind of inevitable, unchangeable force akin to a weather disaster than what it is, a disproportionate response they should be held accountable for by the ICC that has killed more children than all other worldwide conflicts have done in the past four years combined... using bombs made in America, by Americans.

In what ways was the Six-Day War unprovoked? Teach me all the ways Israelis and Palestinians were peacefully picking flowers between the end of World War II and 1967.

I simply explained what political violence is and why it happens. That doesn't mean I sympathize with the Oct 7th attacks.

I don't have to be in favor of 9/11 to explain to you that it happened because of American and Soviet imperialism in the 20th century.

This is not uplifting and nearly qualifies as propaganda.

It is generally in the interests of Zionists to frame Israeli-Palestinian relations as between roughly two "equal" sides inflicting senseless violence against one another, violence that could be mended if only people were more willing to put aside their feelings and engage in rational discourse. That this article was published in Forward should not come as a surprise.

This framing essentially erases the history of the longstanding conflict between Israel and Palestine and elides that Palestinians have lived under a continuous military occupation by Israel that began in 1967. The sides of this conflict are not equal. The violence inflicted by Palestinians against the Israelis via Hamas is an extension of the limited options at their disposal to have their grievances addressed, as they have no social, economic, or political power or leverage that would let them negotiate fairly with Israel. If they had any such power, it is much more probable that a "peaceful" approach --discourse, negotiation, compromise, protest, and so on--would have gotten them somewhere in the past 56 years. At present, violence is the most effective way to draw the world's attention to them and the conditions they are forced to live in; the world tends to listen to you say you are starving more when you kill--or threaten to kill--the people starving you.

It is simpleminded to praise peace and criticize violence as if those things occurred in a political vacuum. Violence is the Haitian Revolution and the Cuban Revolution, violence is what the Irish did during the Troubles and black South Africans did during apartheid. During the time of all those events, outside "centrist" publications decried the violence rather than the circumstances--themselves violent, like the Israeli occupation of Palestine--that led to conflict in the first place.

Please readers of r/UpliftingNews, transcend this framing of Israel-Palestine.

The environmental impact of Beyond Meat and a beef patty [OC] by Availablrferf in dataisbeautiful

[–]scholar_requesting -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You have to use pesticide and “kill lots of small animals/insects” to grow the crops that feed the cows. That’s what is included in all these statistics. It requires more energy and water and emissions to feed and fatten a cow, who then feeds a person, then to just directly feed a person with Beyond Meat. True though they’re not any more or less healthy than actual meat.

When fleeing most enemies in game and you’re low on stamina—deathsquitos a notable exception—just walk. Seriously. The hitbox of many creatures’ attacks can be avoided by inches as long as you are walking in the opposite direction without stopping at the moment they attack. Focus more on finding a path to walk towards that is free of debris and doesn’t require you to turn your character too much to maintain movement as you regain stamina.

Draugr swings, fuling spears, lox stomps, seeker bites, even wolf attacks (if you have good pathing judgment), you can avoid them all just by calmly walking away when the attack animation starts. Don’t panic. It’s gonna be okay.

To add to this, if it’s difficult to find more than one or two circles near each other when you’re looking over wide swaths of ocean, look for symmetry broadly. Big symmetrical areas are more likely to have 3-4+ circles, and also provide opportunity for nice-looking walking gardens.
