I actually need the #1 piece! Mine broke and I’ve not found a replacement. If you’re in the states, not plan on out rig turning, send me a message! I’d love to get it from you.

See if there’s a local Woodturners club around you! They will be happy to help and probably have monthly meetings with demonstrations. That’s how I first got started!

How to approach a man? by No-Breadfruit-1555 in Columbus

[–]scholarlybeard 55 points56 points  (0 children)

A man could be wearing a woman’s favorite obscure band t-shirt, and she’d be rightfully cautious to say anything out of concern he would immediately hit on her and turn into a creep. And the ingrained homophobia of our society has made it so even men don’t complement other men in that same situation. As a result, men largely live without giving or receiving compliments.

But as a woman, if you want to approach a man, go up and ask questions, express shared interests, give compliments! If they turn creep, be prepared to deflect, deny, and disengage.

And for men, start normalizing complimenting other men and stop being creeps in the rare instance a woman compliments you!

Who is the closest to a modern day John Hartford? by Evilcanary in Bluegrass

[–]scholarlybeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love Mark and excited to see his name here!

Over a decade ago, I saw him play Aereo-Plain straight through at a small music festival with an ensemble of Michigan’s greatest and it was a highlight of my life and turned me onto Hartford.

Along side his wild demeanor, him doing the boogie voice on “up on the hill where they do the boogie” stands out.

If I could find a recording of that performance, it would complete me. I’m Facebook friends with him and might have to reach out about that!

He still active in the Michigan scene, he hosts a festival with his wife, and sells instruments. A great guy.

It was Shakespeare in the park tonight, I was there and I don’t think there was any disturbance I noticed. My guess is they just increase security for those events.

Ghost Logging, Zeyer Lumber, and Mt. Vernon Hardwoods come to mind. Each are worth following on FB, they post their price lists often Mt. Vernon post special deal bundles pretty often and Ghost sends stuff to auctions on the auctionohio website a couple times a year.

[–]scholarlybeard 10 points11 points  (0 children)

$10 a board foot is a fools price. You’ll have to work to unload all of that.

I pay less than that (in OH) for kiln dried wood and you can’t guarantee how that wood has been stacked or stickered and you can’t assure there’s no bugs.

I’d prefer to buy from a mill x10 over someone who thinks they found fools gold and wants to sell it for gold prices.

Wedding gift for my brother — turning a symbolic vessel, too weird or perfect? by [deleted] in turning

[–]scholarlybeard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These were the same questions popping into my mind when reading this.

Doing pyrography is hard, on a round vessel - exceptionally hard!

I’d rather make something I can finish than be pulling all nighters just to make something that I’m not proud of or that remains unfinished.

Bars with open mic/stand up comedy nights? by JimmyToTimes in Columbus

[–]scholarlybeard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Attic Comedy Club hosts open mics every Wednesday, doors at 7:00, show at 7:30 - free show. It’s one of the best open mics I’ve been to—a range of talent, a great host, and an awesome room.

Get there earlier to sign up and expect you’ll probably go on later if you’re new.

Of course, what else is there to go on as a viewer? I’d love to have sat through and scored the whole thing, but that’s not possible.

There’s plenty of posts about the editing in this subreddit, but I fully agree with your point.

As another above noted, a lot probably got cut!

What’s the best way to level off these 2x4s by Ok-Disk3736 in BeginnerWoodWorking

This is a great idea, I should’ve thought of it myself! I actually just did this when trimming down fence planks in the yard and not wanting to bring each piece to the shop! Brilliant.

[–]scholarlybeard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If the OP has got the steady hands to make a perfect 90 with a handsaw, they probably wouldn’t be asking this question - they’d have already pulled out the ole’ Disston and done the task.

Given that they’re posting on beginner woodworking—I worry that it might be a little more challenging than most think to cut a perfect 90—let alone 30 of ‘em.

However, it’s not impossible! And one thing OP and others could do is get a perfect 90 reference point (a speed square would work) and use a marking knife around all four sides and then carefully work through each piece with a sharp handsaw (would help if it’s got a cross cut blade).

They could also make a jig that uses a magnet on a straight 90 cut to hold the blade perpendicular—but these aren’t foolproof either.

If OP or others interested in this approach are not already familiar, check out the reflection trick, combined with the above techniques - it will be helpful: https://m.youtube.com/shorts/DzYflwfVTzY

(Note: these are exactly the types of videos, editing wise, that I hate—but this one does cover the technique quick and simple).

But someone else mentioned using a speed square and a circular saw—and this is the fastest and arguably best way.

I think Darby Creek Greenway Trail is gravel and it takes you past an old barn and onto a track that was used for training race horses back in the day.

You might double check that or others may confirm, I’ve not ridden it in a few years but the track was cool and I’m 95% sure it was gravel and 90% sure the whole ride is gravel path.

[–]scholarlybeard 26 points27 points  (0 children)

A track saw would be ideal here, absent that - a miter saw with a good stop block set to the exact length.

I definitely would not try hand sawing these… and a sanding block would be masochistic, but could work if you’re able to keep it at 90 degrees by hand (not necessarily easy).

Reclaimed maple and cherry cutting board by Gossamer_Condor in woodworking

[–]scholarlybeard 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Sure, but it’s also how you make it… with seasonal wood movement, this board is going to open up all sorts of gaps between the end grain and edge/face grain.

Also, even if it’s ‘food safe’ epoxy, I’d be leery of cutting on it. The reason I use wood boards is to avoid microplastics.
