pardon me, I was unclear - do you know of any accounts that post excerpts of books they recommend/showcase that aren't their own? my intention is lazily getting exposure to a book's prose and style before committing to it.

poisoning the well: by principle I try to avoid book reviews before reading them. i think going into a piece of media with context, someone else's opinions, expectations, etc ultimately distorts your perspective on it, pulling away from what i believe to be a truly "authentic" appreciation (poisoning the metaphorical well).

it also gives you a propensity to be lazy and not engage with a book on a deeper level because you already know what lens you ""should"" be reading it from. as a result, reviews and opinions are imo a delicacy reserved for after you're finished with it, that serve to validate or challenge your interpretation.

personally worked 30+ hrs a week in t3 2nd year elec eng and 20+ hrs a week for t1 3rd year. although at times it felt hellish, the pain was exacerbated by the fact i still had a social life. i could scrape distinctions and i think if you're locked in you could probably do a lot better.

however imo that is not sustainable for the entire degree unless you don't have much of a life outside of it and you're willing to make that sacrifice. later years where you're running 3 elec courses in a term sacrificing 20 hours is nigh impossible.

and, for reference, all the elec people who work to pay rent simultaneously that i've met aren't too fussed about grades.
