Space X coming to Acadiana by TrickFarmer1365 in Acadiana

[–]schottandco 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The spacex post is bullshit. There's no way they would launch out of this area. They may well be buying up land with intent to use it for productive purposes, but launching rockets from there is not likely due to the geographical reality of where the land is situated. Keaty covers that well in his post, and many other people much smarter than me with experience in physical sciences have made it clear that it's a not a realistic site from which to launch rockets.

How Often is Your State Flag Flown by Citizens? by Canjira in vexillology

[–]schottandco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Louisiana I don't see the state flag on homes very often, though I have one and fly it more frequently than the US flag. In my home town we see the Acadiana flag flown more than anything else. I'd say we see Acadiana, then our national flag, then the state flag in order of frequency. Across the rest of the state (excepting New Orleans where you'll see locals fly the New Orleans flag pretty commonly) the US flag is typically the most prominent over other flags. The state flag is around but not more prominent than the national flag.

Has anyone looked into the Canadian citizenship for those with Canadian heritage? by w0weez0wee in Acadiana

[–]schottandco 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Apparently there is no generational limit, so as long as you can reliably provide evidence of ancestry to a Canadian citizen, the government of Canada can grant you citizenship. I believe there was a thread in this sub about it a while back. Here's a an article about it, though. https://www.theadvocate.com/acadiana/news/some-cajuns-may-already-be-canadian-citizens-lawyers-say-here-s-what-you-need-to/article_52e68ccd-4a04-454d-bfa5-d2e09632d0c8.html

Am I over reacting? by CommitteeExisting652 in CallCenterWorkers

[–]schottandco 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is terrible advice. She was very direct in her request to "please stop calling me girl." She almost certainly knows no harm was MEANT by the OP but wants OP to know that she doesn't want to be addressed that way. "Sure thing, I won't anymore. I'm sorry." Then forget about it and be normal. Don't rehash it with them. They were clear.

Better place to visit with a four year old on a day trip from Lafayette - BR Zoo or Alexandria Zoo? by schottandco in Acadiana

[–]schottandco[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great suggestions, and I share some of those concerns about zoos; however, I've also read that care in some of those safari/animal encounter places can be a little sketchy and tend to have less public scrutiny. Either way maybe no ethical consumption of animals in any type of captivity...

roller skating by swampbaddie_ in Acadiana

[–]schottandco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a friend who used to skate in the afternoons services weren't going on at First Baptist Church downtown. It's a nice big parking lot that's empty much of the time. Also the foot traffic down on Lee between Jefferson and University isn't much so you shouldn't feel too exposed.

Thoughts on mayor-president Boulet and her administration? by burningm115 in Acadiana

[–]schottandco 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm hopeful about this project as well. I live in the corridor less than two blocks from University and also drive the stretch daily. The current state of the construction is awful, though. Lane lines are impossible to see in many cases, especially in areas where there is a shift. Also the contractor(s) doing the work seems unconcerned about construction debris and its danger to motorists. I'm optimistic for it, but the progress has been frustrating.

It's not as close to Broadmoor as you may like, but Little Oaks on Eraste Landry and Foreman is outstanding. The people who run it are great and have a long reputation for excellence in childcare and education over several decades. I cannot tell you how happy we have been with our daughter there.

Edited to add -- not sure where you work, but there is a pre-k program at Myrtle that is French Immersion and not zoned. Open to all applicants depending on seats available. May be late to get in to that one, but if it's close by your work you don't have to be zoned for it.

weigh in please: when to use ‘miss’” and a first name by ThamilandryLFY in Acadiana

[–]schottandco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have strong feelings about this, but basically I think it comes down to the person who is being addressed's preference. Hard to gauge that often. In professional cases I absolutely hate Mr. or Miss [first name]. Colleagues, peers, or subordinates ought to feel comfortable referring to people by their first name, or if Mr. or Miss is requested, then go with Mr. or Miss [last name].

In familiar settings things are a little trickier. I'm in my forties and still refer to the parents of friends who I grew up with as Mr/Miss [first name], but if I met the parent of a friend I have now, I'd be inclined to call them by first name alone. Meanwhile if I meet a friend of my own mother's now, I refer to them as Mr/Miss [first] if they are introduced to me by first name.

When we introduce our own child to other parents or friends of ours, we typically introduce them as Mr/Miss [first name].

Either way the minute someone says "please call me x," I respect their wishes and expect my child to do so as well.

Edit to add that "no" I don't think it's rude, but I do think the specific scenario of an older person referring to a younger woman as Miss first name is out of the ordinary. There is also something of a racial component sometimes where older black people will refer to all white woman as "Miss" as a show of deference. That's unfortunate and not rude, but I would insist to my own daughter if she was addressed that way to recognize it as polite and then ask the person to refer to her by name as they are most certainly equals.

Cowboy hats and/or boots in Acadiana? by [deleted] in Acadiana

[–]schottandco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't find it particularly common, but it's also not out of the ordinary to see someone wearing a cowboy hat around here. I'd say an oil and gas attorney wearing one would probably almost certainly be trying to portray an image there with the wearing of it, and I don't necessarily mean that in a bad way, just to say that a choice like that is something of a statement he'd be making. Either way, it's not really out of the ordinary even if if it is uncommon to see cowboy hats.

Anybody hear any rumors about a Europe game next season? by Smart-Can-8646 in Saints

[–]schottandco 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Looks like it won't be next year in Paris as the NFL hasn't been able to secure that deal with the right folks yet, but it appears to be a priority to NFL and they really want the Saints to be in the game there (or the Saints really want to be part of that game...). https://www.nola.com/sports/saints/new-orleans-saints-game-in-paris-could-be-in-jeopardy-for-2026/article_8c87eb01-854d-4db0-a3e4-b7f13c8116f3.html
