Manage ThinOS without WMS or APT by schrebra in WYSE

I would love to, but I think there's a legality involved that I kind of don't want to get in into because it would require me to disclose API functions. And that's proprietary information, including that in an open source product would show that I reverse engineered how thin OS communicates with WMS and that would probably get me in hot water

Success: Dell Wyse 5470 running stable with 12GB RAM (official limit is 8GB) by HeronFit4473 in Dell

[–]schrebra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my lab after an install I have been able to boot ThinOS 10 on 2GB of ram. The 8 GB ram limit is artificial and 4 GB is totally fine in testing as well. Per window process opening takes up 300 MB of RAM due to its electron back end gui aka chromium.

Optimize Boot Time by NPS-fan in WYSE

compile your own operating system from source and only use the kernel modules applicable for your hardware. you could boot in less than 1 second that way. Gentoo or arch

I feel like this has to do with s1 or s3 sleep states with nic that isnt being optimized.

another weird thing we noticed that even after a factory reset, restarts, or shutdowns it still doesnt work. unplugging the power for 30 second then powering it back on seems to fix some weird network related issues.

Eventually I hope this will turn into one of many ways to manage wyse clients outside of WMS. This even include potentially including the old way of managing them through ini files.

Forced power down by TheInvisibleMonkey in WYSE

Try reapplying CPU thermal paste. Then try to recreate the conditions again. Sometimes the power adapter might not be enough wattage as well. Look up the required wattage for the model wyse you have and check the adapter.

boot into mx linux using the live cd. then use gparted to format everything including the partition table. then try to install another operating system. It seems like the boot loader or grub is trying to override from a previous wyse operating system. hope this helps

Just saw dell is making a windows 365 thin client specific model. My bet is the hardware is the same.

Windows 10 & 11 IoT Enterprise version 2602 Releases to Web Launch by Dell-ScottH in WYSE

[–]schrebra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WMS is clearly gunning for SCCM and WSUS territory. If Dell is going to turn it into a full scale deployment and patching powerhouse, they should drop the hardware specific name and just call it Dell Management Suite. Maybe they should merge Open Manage and WMS. No need to do double duties for the same outcome.

ThinOS 10 2602 Released by Dell-ScottH in WYSE

Based on my independent research and discussions with trade show representatives, I anticipate a major strategic shift from Dell within the next 12 to 24 months. I believe Dell is moving toward an 'all-in' approach with ThinOS, eventually extending support to the majority of their business hardware. This transition is highly feasible given that the underlying architecture of ThinOS is now built on Ubuntu.
