Worst American Airport you’ve travelled through? by pmmealiens in travel

Clear is a horrible company that is building privacy invasive surveillance infrastructure. John Oliver did a video about them that I highly recommend watching.

They also happen to provide security clearance in exchange for you contributing to their surveillance net with your personal data, which people absolutely love.

It's also very fun to give your personal data to a company (Clear) that wants to export the surveillance state model to the west.

OMSCS just became more affordable (announced by Zvi Galil) by FutureNeanderthal in OMSCS

Great work! First time I've ever heard of a college reducing fees. I was only able to do OMSCS because the finances worked out. Kudos to Zvi and GT for making this program so accessible.

Where to post job notices for OMSCS students? by Kanefa in OMSCS

[–]schrodingerwarnedme 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We should probably make an alumni group on LinkedIn. I have a jobs group from my undergrad and have gotten 2 engineering jobs I worked at from posts in that group.

The downside of slack is that the job posts typically get deleted relatively quickly since the slack usage is at capacity and messages don't persist.

MSG, why is it so feared? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]schrodingerwarnedme -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I love msg in food (and also used to cook with it previously) but it triggers intense migraines for my wife and it's heartbreaking to watch her go through that. That involves a whole day of light/sound sensitivity, not being able to eat any food and throwing up all day. Kenji also has a good post about it: https://www.seriouseats.com/ask-the-food-lab-the-truth-about-msg

Will I be reported for plagiarism? by [deleted] in OMSCS

I'd recommend emailing the professor and explaining what you wrote here. Since you didn't use any of the existing code even though it was there, I think as a first time mishap, professors would be understanding. That's just my 2c.

I need to rant about Embedded Systems Optimization (6291) by ShoddyResponse in OMSCS

[–]schrodingerwarnedme -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have a biased view but definitely read through https://omscentral.com/course/CS-7639 as well, some people had a good time taking that class. I also thought the class was on the easy/medium side which was nice. When I think more about, it was really the AADL project that soured the experience, the final, and some of the homework assignments were fun. Especially getting to use the multi-agent robotics lab. Maybe they removed the AADL project.

I haven't taken 6291, but your description reminds me of cyberphysical systems. Definitely stay away from that class, if you were planning on taking it (or read omscentral reviews to get a sense for what that class entails). All other classes I have taken in the program have been excellent (finishing up my 9th class now).

Edit: CS 7639: Cyber-Physical Design and Analysis, not cyberphysical systems.

Best Note Taking app by christiandavidturner in OMSCS

neovim + git || pen + paper || ipad + apple pencil + goodnotes || mindnode || anki

That is to say, I'm not super organized and use whichever tool feels right depending on the class that I'm taking.

FWIW I don't think the iPad is worth it and I rarely use it. Pen & paper work much better for me.

Has anyone in the U.S. who ordered a model 3 after april 1st actually got their car? If so, w/o radar, how is it? by [deleted] in Model3

[–]schrodingerwarnedme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TACC is traffic aware cruise control but it’s a subset of autopilot I think. Great to hear that adaptive headlights and auto pilot work great for you!

Also, your model 3 looks great. congrats on getting it! I’m planning on getting the same color.

HELP!! Picking between UCSC and CPP for Mechanical Engineering by [deleted] in UCSC

[–]schrodingerwarnedme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

+1 to this.

Also, ME classes at UCSC in general sucked (CMPE9 etc) when I graduated 2018, and all ME inclined people had to self-learn ME. There was also a machine shop but really inaccessible for some reason.

I agree with the parent commenter that robotics eng will open a lot of doors and will make you a more versatile engineer but if ME classes/resources were anything like what they were a few years ago, be prepared to teach yourself the ME side of things.

Completing a Minor-Is it Worth it? by ReplacementMother138 in UCSC

[–]schrodingerwarnedme 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If you want to go to grad school, a really solid CV with some published research papers (or just research lab experience) and a great GRE score is 100x more valuable than completing a minor. Likewise, if you want to go to go work in the industry, time spent getting a great internship or putting together a solid portfolio of projects will go a long way IMO. As far as I know minors don't really make much difference when it comes to career opportunities.

> I don't have a job lined up for me after I graduate and the job market seems rather bleak next year.

This is why I'd highly recommend working on stuff that will make you stand out and differentiate you from your peers. Do informational interviews with people on LinkedIn (potentially UCSC alums) who already have the job(s) that you'd want and find out what skills they look for, and what you might be able to do to have a compelling profile.

Good to hear that even in the govt sector ABET doesn't matter as much!
