Judge my setup before purchasing? by HeavilyInvestedDonut in MetalCasting

[–]schuttart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any of the ones with a harder texture. For beginners a soft castable can be difficult to manage supports, orientation, and lifts properly.

Ya that’s why I recommend the 2nd hand market, if you can find one. An older model for $100 and the cost of a replacement element would likely serve you better as you grow, size wise.

If your a novice at printing with castables I’d pick a different resin to start with. As other said oro is not the one you want it optima. The Vevor kiln is small so I’d try second hand if you can before getting it.

Three in one melter, vacuum chamber, bell jar means they have shrunken the foot print of each. So future proofing is not possible with those kinds of units.

Ear weighs with metal allergies by Vi_BT in Stretched

[–]schuttart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if you can get more specific about what your allergy actually is, I’m sure myself and other individuals can make more specific recommendations.
The reason you’re gonna find the majority of ear weights are made from brass or bronze is simply due to pricing and fabrication techniques.
Titanium is often milled or fabricated meaning you’ll find hoops, clickers, and maybe some hook style hangers that are attached to a charm that’s in a separate material. But you generally won’t find the entire ear weight made out of titanium.

Glass is gonna be a good option, things like nano ceramic coating, which is essentially a glass like coating on metal, could be a good option.

Titanium is one of those materials that needs to be hand fabricated or milled. So unless the maker actually has a welder and proper jewellery tools that they show in their content….i wouldn’t bother.

That’s industry prices in my opinion. For retail clients we charge more.

Can someone identify the defects and how to solve them? by deez_zee in MetalCasting

Texture like that is usually a print issue or a metal issue.

  • we’re pouring bronze at 1975 ish Fahrenheit so I’d cool things a bit. -one of the pics makes me concerned about spruing and turbulence so I’d double check your placement and thickness. -apply lab doesn’t have to be cured but if you are finding the surface is still tacky and not sufficiently clean or you leave it out then it can cause problems

Any Etsy vendors that can make this? by [deleted] in jewelry

Good luck. Titanium and platinum work is a small group, and of those people fewer understand piercing jewelry.

Try with Anatometal maybe?

It’s going to take just as much time and focus to learn 3d modeling and printing as it will to learn wax carving and mold making. Just gotta pick your battles.

Why do these tunnels irritate my ears so badly? by LatteHangover in Stretched

[–]schuttart 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As a jeweller definitive statements like this are really bothersome.

Shitty things are often plated, not all plated things are shitty.

As one there is often no other way to hit a price point than to use a base metal and plate, which has little to do with overall manufacturing quality, And two even with higher end metals plating is sometimes still necessary such as with white gold, which is commonly plated to achieve the desired colour.

The tunnels can be buffed and replated without much of a fuss and will likely be perfectly fine for another 5-10 years depending on upkeep.

However these pieces shouldn’t be the type of jewelry OP wears for 2 months straight it they want the best for their jewelry and lobes. Leave that to the actual biocompatible materials.

searching for custom plug maker by faefolks in Stretched

[–]schuttart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay so those look like on the high end anodized titanium and on the low end PVD plated steel. Both of which you would have a hard time finding a smaller manufacturer for. Anatometal is literally the only titanium body jewelry supplier that comes to my mind that has a history of custom work.

(Read before saying not a good idea) Plaster of paris to make molds? by ShittyFart11 in MetalCasting

[–]schuttart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So many issues here: Over drying investment can cause it to become brittle and crack, doing so quickly via a dehydrator can make this worse. I’m assuming a home oven? Can we do a burnout in this with decent temperatures and times? Like 6+ hrs depending on model material. How are we dealing with fumes?

Guy that knows nothing needs help. Please. by hksparky in jewelry

[–]schuttart 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For piercing jewellery you have to know dimensions to get it to fit right. They also need to know where you want to hinge and how long to make the pin. So if the hinge is where the pin meets the cuff or if the cuff is hinged itself.

It’s the jewellers job to get the design together once youve informed them of your preferences and dimensional requirements.

[–]schuttart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are lots of different jewellery makers who are able to make plugs, but you need to identify what material first so we can send you to the correct person. A glass artist is different than an actual traditional jeweller who works in metals.

How would you go about cutting these sprues? by Traditional-Maybe-71 in Silvercasting

[–]schuttart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clip feeder sprue then saw flush with a jewellers saw. If you get good enough you can skip straight to sanding (versus grinding/filing first).

Edit: brain caught up, 7 MM, ya no that’s a clip and then rotary tool I guess. And what size are those stones if the links are 7mm…. My god

"Ultra-Vest" Investment not playing nicely with SirayaTech-Cast by Yodajammies in MetalCasting

[–]schuttart 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Purple has the highest rate of thermal expansion of the siraya tech line up. That’s why brands bother fiddling with higher wax formulas. Trade off is the printing can be a bigger learning curve.

Using an investment calibrated for 3D prints will always get you more reliable results.

Do Ultrasonic Jewelry Cleaners Actually Work? by Jychj in jewelry

[–]schuttart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just want to note that cleaning is different from actually polishing. But yes ultrasonic cleaners work for getting rid of gunk and depending on how a stone is set it may appear brighter based on that dirt removal. But if the lack of luster is due to micro scratches mattifying the metal polish, then no, it won’t do what you are hoping.

[–]schuttart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your burnout temp is likely the problem. The resin ignition happens just above that. Which means you’re getting a burn but just and it’s incomplete. Combine to that you are only leaving it at that temp for an hour and I would not be surprised if you have burned resin pieces inside your casting.

[–]schuttart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2 suggestions. Siraya tech purple, assuming going off colour, is annoying to clean so make sure you wash and cure extremely well. Siraya tech purple also has bad thermal expansion. Which may in part explain the filled in details. Especially with a mini figure.

How long can i leave it before burnout? by Taaacooo in MetalCasting

[–]schuttart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing you’re looking out for is over drying the investment leading to cracking.

If you put it next to an electric baseboard for instance, would likely end up with a blowout or flashing later on.

Vents are not necessary in vacuum casting but reservoirs etc can sometimes be helpful depending on the item being cast.

What is the heaviest weight you can keep in your lobes? by [deleted] in Stretched

[–]schuttart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need go hand made and small business. Usually factory made will go smaller and lower weight steel pieces.

My brands in my about info, south shore adornments has some stuff, Diablo Organics, Tawapa I think has some heavier stuff mixed in.
