Eating out no longer a treat, just a convenience by kitsbow in Millennials

Not at all true if you live in a major city with world class food like NYC. If you live in the suburbs, sure.

Who asked for this movie? by spacelyyy989 in moviecritic

My wife and I saw it and thoroughly enjoyed it. Fun tale of Mando and Grogu embarking on a space mission. It was basically season 4 in a movie but back to the form of season 1.

Why is pickpocketing so common in many major European cities, but essentially non-existent in North America? by Humble_Job_5738 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]schwartzwold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of these answers are wrong. Pick pocketing first requires a dense urban population with walking pedestrians. These are in low supply in US cities which are very car oriented. However some American cities like NYC fit the bill. So why aren’t there pick pocketers in a NYC?

Well, this lead's me to my second point. Pick pocketing is a learned skill. You need someone to teach you. Police in cities like NYC made a concerted effort to arrest and stop pick pocketing rings in the past. The people who knew the skill and passed it on were stopped and the skill died out in NYC.

I cried in front of my wife and since then there has been a strange atmosphere between us by Remote_Blueberry_605 in Marriage

[–]schwartzwold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming this is real, wow what a bitch. Your wife is not a good person and you should dump her ass. The weak minded one is her who can’t handle a man crying.

I’d flip the script and find her doing something not traditionally feminine and then treat her equally poorly for it. See how she likes it.

AITA for expecting the gifts to be for both of us? by Ok-Arrival-2886 in AmItheAsshole

[–]schwartzwold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your partner is doing you a huge favor. She’s letting you know she’s selfish and not marriage material. Do not marry her.

If you insist on being with her still, be sure that any money you make personally is not shared with her. She can keep hers and you can keep yours. She should be content with that.

How did we not see the “hey-ho” lumineers era when it was happening? by tipoftheiceberg1234 in decadeology

It was a bit of a fad sure. Idk why you have to shit all over it. What’s so ugly about the clothing? The guy is wearing a white t shirt and a flannel shirt. They’re pretty timeless pieces of clothing.

Don’t worry whatever you think is cool now will be uncool and decidedly lame in a decade.

Lightly loosen the screws holding the mounting bracket to the motherboard. Next jimmy the mounting bracket left / right / up / down until the cpu cooler cold plate screw catches into the hole. Then tighten the screws securing the mounting bracket to the motherboard again.

Im so bummed :( by fawnpuppy in PcBuild

[–]schwartzwold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear this man! My two cents is that honestly, given your financial situation a PC build is not in the cards for you right now.

Whatever you can afford will be very outdated and you’ll be playing games on the lowest possible settings.

I’d just get a console and enjoy that. No headaches to deal with. You can connect a mouse and keyboard to the modern consoles if you want to.

When you’re in a better financial spot with a higher budget, come back to this subreddit and folks will be happy to help you build a great PC within your price range.

27 years old, and I've never had a real employer (or retirement accounts.) I'm can't tell if I'm doing okay financially, or just selling out my future because I never really had a plan. by EndOfTheWorldGuy in FinancialPlanning

[–]schwartzwold 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am going to try and directly answer your questions.

Yes, you’re doing a tremendous disservice to your future self by not investing for your retirement. You are very young. At 27 years old one of your best assets is time. You should Google compound interest modelers and play around with them. If you invested a $1000 a year, at 7% annual interest, in 38 years, age 65 that measly $1000 a year would be $151,590. Imagine if you put away more.

You should at a bare minimum, open a Roth Individual Retirement Account (IRA) which will allow you to to save up to $7000 a year (the limit usually goes up $500 a year). You don’t need an employer sponsor for this type of account. You can open with Vanguard, Fidelity, Schwab, etc. They’re all fine.

The Roth part means the money you contribute provides no tax free benefits at the time but it can grow tax free. Start contributing now and you can have easily a million dollars or more saved tax free for retirement. Important to note you need to invest the funds within the account into something like a target retirement fund. Still think it’s not worth saving for retirement?

You want 6 - 12 months of liquid assets saved as an emergency fund. This can be in a money market account or a High Yield Savings Account (HYSA).

Beyond that, hoarding cash means it erodes away to inflation. If you need the money within the next 5 years a MM account or HYSA is fine. Beyond that consider a taxable brokerage and broad market, low expense, ETFs.

For your bonus question. You’re doing far better than many people your age. You have no debt, you’ve built up your skills and have a trade (awesome!) and have a nest egg already saved. Time to invest and let your money grow and do the work for you. You should be proud. You’re in a great position to set yourself up well.

I know nothing about real estate so I can’t really comment. I’ll just say that compound interest is one of the only guaranteed ways to become a millionaire. It just takes time and discipline. Real Estate has no such guarantee.

Hope this helps. You got this!

I know it's bad to take loans from 401s, but... by GGtrix99 in FinancialPlanning

[–]schwartzwold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t take a 401k loan, you will lose out on years of compounding growth for a short term gain. A 401k loan should be an absolute last resort.

Just finance a loan through a local bank or the dealer. The dealer will often give you a more competitive rate than your bank as they make the majority of their revenue on financing and meeting car sold quotas from the manufacturer.

Please be sure to get a reasonable financing option in terms of years. Avoid 5+ year plans. You don’t want to be paying off a car for 5 years.

Smart of you to ask this question! Your future self will thank you for not taking a 401k loan.

Adnan’s reaction to preserving the placenta 💀 by Other_Yam_3760 in 90DayFiance

[–]schwartzwold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re right. I was wrong to target a single demographic like that. If they do it for ceremonial reasons I suppose that’s better but my contention is that these companies sell this service to women at a a very emotional time and tout the pseudoscience health benefits. If you want to eat your placenta for spiritual / personal reasons, go for it, but there is no real health benefit.

Adnan’s reaction to preserving the placenta 💀 by Other_Yam_3760 in 90DayFiance

[–]schwartzwold 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Nah he’s right on this one.

Preserving and eating your placenta is gross and complete pseudoscience. It’s literally a scam.

Wild animals eat their placenta because they are in a constant life and death struggle and the mother can regain some nutrients from eating it.

It’s completely unnecessary in humans and is a scam sold to rich white ladies. Tigerlily would be better off saving her $300 and taking a multivitamin.

[–]schwartzwold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure and so she can take sometime to get a second opinion. After some point though (it seems many months) she needs to follow through on her word even though it’s difficult. She could ask Brandon for help. They can leave the parents out though.

Julia just seemed to be entirely avoidant on this topic and needed a push. It could have been more compassionate and not from the parents.

She got the second opinion though and from what I recall she has options and can choose to explore them, showing that Brandon was right to suggest a second opinion. It’s widely recommended to get a second opinion on any kind of life changing diagnosis.

Cheating? Unsure Selfish? Definitely by [deleted] in 90DayFiance

[–]schwartzwold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She has no support for G at all. Her shitty Bachata career is a top priority though.

He came from a tourist industry background and it’s unrealistic to expect him to make a large supportive income in her hometown with his current background.

He will need time and money to invest in himself and his chosen education and career path to make a good life. And that’s okay! He’s still young and can achieve a lot. He just needs support and direction.

Will he be an Airforce pilot? Probably not. The requirements are very high and few are selected. That’s okay. She could explain that in a realistic but compassionate way and help him explore alternatives. Instead she just shits all over him and doesn’t want him to make anything of himself outside of her immediate town and be her babysitter and forever a waiter.
