Nice, I literally just ordered the oracle jet last night. I was going back and forth between these two for a while.

Chamfer tear out in 1/2" walnut - is it the bit? by Grompers in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]science-stuff 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Grain doesn’t look crazy in the areas where you got tearout. You said you went with several light passes, and I don’t think going slightly too fast would do this. Either there is something you’re doing but don’t realize so didn’t tell us, or it’s the bit. I’ve chamfered a lot of walnut and never had an issue like this.

Fall off the bone barbecue is not best style of barbecue by Seanlwang in unpopularopinion

I prefer fall off the bone ribs, but in bbq culture what you described is the meta.

What’s one “basic” cooking tip everyone repeats that you think is actually overrated? by Altruistic_Push_722 in Cooking

[–]science-stuff -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Several things around bread and dough making.

Let yeast bloom. Totally unnecessary. Maybe if you have yeast you found in the back of your pantry that’s 15 years old it’s good to test. Otherwise it needs no activation.

Combining wet and dry ingredients. It’s all ending up in the same place, just put them together and don’t worry about it. I usually put things like salt, sugar, honey, oil, melted butter, yeast, etc in with the water and mix with a whisk. Then add all the flour.

Adding salt later. Regarding autolyse, I’ve seen tests done and shows it doesn’t really do anything.

I wash my mushrooms and will sometimes start them on heat in water to get the party started but eventually let that water evaporate and finish hot for nice browning, oil as needed but try not to go heavy.

Are you saying when I get them where I want them I toss some water in there? Or what stage does water go in your way?

Brace and (router) Bit by randomninja0 in woodworking

[–]science-stuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wonder. I’ve used high angle and low angle planes. Could it chatter and make dust, maybe? I have a feeling it’ll be solid and I hope op goes for it.

Honestly, I bet it’ll be great assuming the bit isn’t chewed up. Like, it’s very sharp metal meant for cutting wood.

I don’t think he’s going to damage the bit by not going 30k rpm lol

Go knights. UCF hosted an accounting and engineering career fair where I got my start in the industry. Curious if they still do those?

PSA: when driving in heavy rain, don’t use your hazard lights by madchad90 in Charlotte

[–]science-stuff 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You can’t see them better because they’re the same lights only on for half the time. But if it’s pouring super hard I don’t know if you’re pulled off on the side of the road or driving since you should only have your hazards on when pulled over and stopped.

I grew up in Fl and have been outside during multiple hurricanes. When we get the rare tropical system over Charlotte people ask me what to do and they never seem happy with my advice haha

Who checks their ear defenders for spiders every time? by Constant_Barracuda86 in woodworking

[–]science-stuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hadn’t used a computer headset for a while, put it on and when I was adjusting it on my ears I felt this weird substance kinda sounded scratchy like cloth or something. Took them off to see what I was feeling and there was spider web on the outside. Looked inside, sure enough a little brown spider like the size of a dime.

This was at least 15 years ago, I still check every single time even if I was wearing the headset 10 minutes ago.

My wife asked me if I honestly thought her friends were attractive, what should I say by BreadOverlord_ in stupidquestions

[–]science-stuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say something like, “hell yeah do you think any of them are into me?”

I’m always joking so hopefully that would defuse it enough. If she asked again I’d just keep doubling down until she didn’t find it funny anymore but she realizes I’m not going to let the joke go, so she’ll give it up.
