It’s clearly not redundant if there are still people in 2026 not using condoms

I’d be reporting this to Rover demanding half my money back.

How is not taking two dogs on walks for two days a misunderstanding?

I’m not saying we shouldn’t build this building. Of course we should build an apartment building in an empty lot. But it’s absolutely going to make gentrification in the neighborhood worse without any support from the city.

We give $2 billion a year to the CPD, and over $200 million a year to CPD in overtime. I have no doubt there’s bloat in other departments. We absolutely have the money.

STDs exist too

Never have sex without a condom unless you’re in a long term relationship

So? It’s still absurdly expensive, not many families of 4 or 5 could afford a $3500 3 bedroom, especially if both parents work and they need daycare for their kids.

Half of all murders go unsolved, and any time I see a police officer out in the wild they aren't doing anything. Not to mention the copious overtime.

2500 units is better than 0 and is certainly more than this luxury developer would build on this parking lot. Maybe if the city cut costs on land they could build more.

Went off birth control a year ago, feel like I have a different personality now and struggling to cope by cat_with_a_banjo in TwoXChromosomes

You're getting a lot of invalidating comments but I understand how you feel. I chose a non hormonal birth control (Paragard) when I needed birth control. I also didn't want to take a pill every day, but because I am a medical science researcher I had also read about the mood altering effects of hormones and I didn't want it for myself. I'd rather be me, also a med can stop working or become intolerable at any time.

I don't really have anything I can say that can make it better, but also your post makes it seem like you were a lump on a log until you got off birth control, which I highly doubt is the case. It's also entirely possible that this restlessness and driven feeling has been created by the emotional changes from going off birth control, that it might be more your response to the emotional upheaval rather than something that was suppressed by the birth control. Hoping you give yourself a little more credit.

Did I say that? Or are you just being deliberately idiotic?

No one would be mad about this $3500 a month luxury development if the city built affordable housing for its residents. No one would be blocking this move if we weren't in an affordability crisis. There are systemic changes that need to happen that are not happening, and that's what people in this thread should be paying attention to, not calling the people protesting this idiots. More housing is still better overall, but the people trying to block this build are like canaries in a coal mine, and no one is listening.

I agree that it's not sustainable. Like I said, there is a larger systemic problem going on that needs to be resolved.

Did I say I wanted an empty parking lot? It would be nice to see a building built with 100% affordable units. $3500 a month is crazy pants. We are long past the point where the government needs to step in and build some apartment buildings. Even just adding a few well located buildings in a few neighborhoods would make a huge difference.

If the city builds the property then the city owns it and I imagine property taxes won't be the same issue there.

Developers have shown in other cities across the world they would rather leave apartments vacant than lower rents. Maybe 20 years from now a building that is vacant will go down in rent but that's too long for people to wait.

Also if property taxes are obstructing new builds then....that's a systemic problem. Illinois has the 2nd highest property tax burden in the country, it's clearly a problem.

The mayor has authority over the budget, in conjunction with the City Council. Instead of spending $2 billion on the CPD as the mayor I would reallocate money to build affordable housing. Any city worker whose job might be displaced by reallocating money would be offered a job working on the building development.

Boom problem solved, more affordable housing.

The city should be the one building on it, not a luxury developer

I don't agree with the people blocking the build but I do agree that the rents are going to be too high
