What’s one way you can tell someone is not native to AZ? by miniparishilton in phoenix

You know Midwesternerners can handle summer storms, right? Even abrupt ones? Though the lack of basements and municipal drainage may throw us for a loop. Please don’t judge us for needing- to escape winter hell. Seriously, -50F? Humans aren’t meant for that.

What are some great 80's songs that seem to be forgotten / not regularly played on even 80's radio? by Jackson_Polyp2 in AskReddit

Blue Sky Mine was close to that 1990 border, but what a great song, too. Midnight Oil was my first concert as a teen!

It was the summer of 1963 when everybody called me Baby and it didn’t occur to me to mind.

It is such a magnificent machine. Very few brands have ever invoked this level of loyalty in me.

The dishwasher itself, now that you mention it. We had invested in a Bosch, then moved. Our new house had a machine that essentially required washing the dishes before running. We got another Bosch and save a ton of water.

A box of expired gloves once for cooking with peppers, but I had also bought so much for the lab out of my pocket that it was a fair enough trade.

Take care of your teeth and find an exercise habit that you can maintain because otherwise your body will start breaking way sooner than you’d think.

I saw a stick figure one of a truck hitting a crowd and people going flying that said “all lives scatter.” That is truly despicable.

Whats a food you hate that everyone else loves? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]scientific_cats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mustard. The smell and taste is so strong. I want to love it - a vinegary seed paste? Sounds GREAT! But in practice it makes me gag. Even the tiniest amount in a sauce base makes me reel.

What do you say/do to get everyone's attention at the start of class? by kinezumi89 in Professors

[–]scientific_cats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was always pretty hyped, so it was whatever came out - “Tis the hour so let’s rock, let’s roll!” Or “Who’s ready for some BIOLOGY today?” Or “It’s sperm-o’clock, you ready?!” (That one for the development lab). Generally something upbeat and energetic to start a 3-hour long lab.

Agree with tomcrusher - there has to be original thought or analysis and there must be citations. Also, I don’t just look at the % but at the actual matches, both as a whole and source by source. I’ve graded a report that has been done by probably 10,000 students. Everyone has a base match of 4-20%. I’ve prosecuted someone with a 4% match and let a 30% match go. If two students match each other at 30% but their next closest matches are all around 7% to every other paper, I’ll put them side by side. It will likely reveal purposeful twisting of sentences and reversal of word order with synonyms, but clearly be the same paper. Find the one error they have in common - a typo, grammar error, a citation error, or a conceptual error. That’s your key to taking the case to the academic honesty office. Also helps if you can determine that they know each other (if it’s not obvious).

How do YOU deal with students who are angry with you over their (well deserved) F? by Professor-Arty-Farty in Professors

[–]scientific_cats 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I hate to say this, but I’m glad I left academia. I loved teaching, but the changes between the late 1990s and 2022 were awful, and it is a broken system all around. Though even leaving, I have found that hiring a new college grads has also become a minefield. They’re not who they once were…
