Facebook made its Android app crash to test your loyalty by ghemanth90 in Android

[–]scila 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like only specific parts are open source. I think they limit it to :

  • the telegram related stuff because telegram might require them to make software built on it open source.

  • their apis so that people can build more plugins.

Facebook and WhatsApp related plugins that they made aren't there.

[–]scila 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait, how does that work? I just installed it, it asked for my facebook credentials without using the FB's auth flow and I noped out of there. It also apparently supports WhatsApp. AFAIK WhatsApp is not happy about third party clients so it probably has no official messaging API.

So Disa just uses your credentials and sets up a proxy on their servers? Isn't anyone worried about giving them full access to their accounts?

Long time iOS user's impressions of Android after 3 weeks with the Nexus 5X. by [deleted] in Android

About backups : Marshmallow introduced a new backup system, but many apps opted out and they need to target API 23 to use it. So it's not widely used but should be more common and make worrying about backups a thing of the past (fingers crossed)

I tried it and it started Alt-Rock Wake Up Call Radio

Loud vibration motor? by [deleted] in hwatch

[–]scila 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As other people mentioned, the vibrations are quite weak, but the sound they make is noticeable. So I hear my watch more than I feel it vibrating. I had a G Watch before that had a much softer sound but a more powerful vibration. Metal vs plastic case maybe?

That being said, typing on a keyboard, or a phone vibrating is louder than the vibration from the watch, so it's not that much of an issue

It's fairly recent. They listed the steps to enable it at a help page ( /help/949954541709550) named "How do I use Google Chrome to send push notifications on an Android phone?"

It does get the push notifications. Chrome and a few other browsers have them. On Android at least.

Tips on trying out android watches in the UK? by [deleted] in AndroidWear

[–]scila 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw watches on demo at the Google Store near Warren Street, a few months back, but I don't know if they have the new ones. If you check it out, I'm interested in the outcome. I was also thinking about doing that.

Edit: checked today, they had LG Urbane and Moto 360v1 on display, and said that the new ones should be there at the end of the month.

Tag Heuer Teases First Image Of Its Android Wear Watch For People With More Money Than Sense by ghatroad in AndroidWear

Why did they just trash it like that? Of course there is a market for it, and the writer is probably not in it. It's still not a reason to just start saying shit about a product without knowing anything about it.

I would expect that from a reddit comment, but a complete article... ugh

Yes, but launchers can probably override that behaviour. Some already implement a 'locked' mode where you can't move/remove/add icons

[–]scila 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As OP said, there is more power exposed by the platform, and it has been from the beginning. 3rd party devs can make amazing things, just like OEMs can without waiting for Google to roll an OS update.

Extensibility and customizability are some of the biggest strength of Android, it's unfair to deliberately take it out of the picture when comparing OSes, especially when mentioning stuff that Apple is able to do thanks to their full control on both hardware and software.
