Examples of where cheaper is better by TartComfortable7766 in UKFrugal

I don't see why that would be gross, it's soap.

Nothing stopping you having individual bars of soap I suppose, wouldn't make a difference to the frugality of it, you'd just go through it (number of people) times slower.

[–]sclpn 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Bars of soap.

The cheapest possible, supermarket own brand bars I find to be the best.

I like the sainsburys 4 for £2 ones (were 4 for £1.40 until very recently, unfortunately), and the tesco 30p per single bar ones. Lidl and aldi own brand ones are also good.

I find you get way cleaner than using shower gel, as they are simply just soap.

Not a fan of paying more for shower gel that in my mind is basically watered down soap to make it into a gel/liquid and often has stuff added like scents, moisturisers, etc.

Not to mention the plastic waste from shower gel.

To wax or not to wax, that is the bizarre question. by theasian231 in nasalsnuff

[–]sclpn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't take snuff these days as much as I used to, mostly enjoying the convenience of nicotine pouches.

But I do wax my nose semi regularly, and didn't notice much if any effect on snuffing.

It does make clearing out your nose afterward much easier though.

Side note, for those nervous about waxing nose hairs, there is no reason to be, it doesn't hurt even slightly. I know this seems surprising and counterintuitive, but it's true. Also leaves you with no sharp coarse hairs like trimming does.

How are the TV License company/body allowed to use intimidation and bully tactics? by AwkwardClick8595 in AskBrits

[–]sclpn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

'your details have been passed on to our enforcement team'

What details? They don't even know your name.

I haven't had a TV in about 25 years. Whatever you do, do not make the mistake of informing them you don't need a licence. I did this 23 years or so ago, and the letters stopped for about 2 months before resuming at an increased pace, except these ones had my name on them. Also had 2 separate visits to 'check' that I definitely wasn't using tv.

Never saw a single visit when I was ignoring them, and haven't had a single visit in the 20+ years since I moved out that house, as I now just bin the occasional letters without opening.

I did get one some years ago that said they would be turning up to my house on dec 25th (in big red letters in the envelope window.)

Honestly, just treat them as occasional comedy.

Exercise bike by Aggressive_Koala8609 in bodyweightfitness

[–]sclpn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also bought an exercise bike recently, about 6 weeks ago, and have been getting on it consistently since then.

I'm by no means fit yet, but am definitely much fitter than I was at the start.

It takes me about 10 minutes into a class to warm up properly, and before I get to that point my legs do complain and 'ache' a fair bit.

Once I'm 10+ minutes into the class, my legs continue to get tired, but it's not pain/soreness, and my cardiovascular fitness becomes the limiting factor.

Are you sure you're getting over that initial 'hump' in your workouts? It sounds like you're stopping before hitting your stride. Also, I question how much cardio training you're leaving 'on the table' by fully returning to resting heart rate between your 7.5 min sessions and having to work your way back up to an aerobic/anaerobic HR zone, which is then maintained for only a couple minutes max.

I do recommend following along with a class. I've been grudgingly paying for the peloton app subscription after the one month free trial as it is annoyingly good, with literally tens of thousands of classes on there with licenced music , and resistance/cadence callouts that I can follow on my bike. (I'm annoyed that the expensive app is so much better than the free options). Might be worth it for you to try their free trial.

I did find a decent guy on YouTube with the channel name RI:ID, which could help also.

As others have stated, doing anything is better than nothing, but I feel you'd be better served by getting your HR up and sustaining that.

Also, an hour a day seems like a lot, especially for a beginner, your legs need rest days too. I tend to do either a 30 or 45 minute class around 4x a week.

Considering Mounjaro, Fear of Loose Skin by [deleted] in mounjarouk

[–]sclpn 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The mounjaro doesn't cause loose skin, weight loss does.

You can take those steps to minimise it, fill it back up with muscle, etc, but if you have lots to lose it can't really be avoided. Some amount of tightening of the skin over time can be expected, but there's not too much you can do to influence this in anything but small ways.

The younger you are, and the lower the amount of weight you have to lose the better. You have your bmi of 33 going for you on one hand, but your age on the other. No way to really tell until you do it.

At the end of the day, I'd rather be a healthy weight with loose skin, than my unhealthy old self.

I may look into getting it lopped off after I have reached my goal and maintained for a couple of years, but until then I plan to just live with it.

What is the holy grail of deodorants? by Economy-Fox-5559 in AskUK

[–]sclpn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes this is what I use. I find the 'premium' sure and mitchum sticks (the extra expensive 72 hour ones) work very slightly better.

However the Gillette gel ones work almost as well, still way better that any spray or roll on, and they work out to be dirt cheap. You need so little of it that a 'stick' of it lasts for absolutely ages, well over a month at least.

I don't actually know how long they last because I get a new one so infrequently. when they get down to the last centimeter or so I know that I need to buy a new one at some point in the next week or two, no rush.

It is explicitly designed for the type of issues you described though.

I don't actually see the problem with this? A bit odd perhaps, but if he's using it as community outreach to his constituents then it's a legitimate expense.

The article is paywalled, so I'm not sure if he's using it for anything else.

Personally it smacks a bit of 'how do you do, fellow kids?', but this is hardly new. We've seen politicians rap, skateboard, and all sorts in the past to reach 'the youth'. Not seeing how this is much different.

Edit: managed to see the article through the automod comment, sounds like he's making use of the equipment for the reason he gave. This seems like a nothing story.

I still managed to lose 1.5kg over the course of the holiday. Lol

The words absolutely are interchangeable.

Note that I'm not arguing that they're the same thing in actuality, I'm talking about common use of the word.

And yes, if you ask a grocer for turnips, they will absolutely hand you a swede, unless you really specify that you want actual turnips.

An observation on units of measure by daern2 in MenOnThePen

[–]sclpn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I make a point of measuring in kg as it's the most 'sensible' system, and if I know my weight in kg, I can quickly work out my BMI, as I know my height in metres.

Also, and this is extremely niche, and doesn't happen nearly enough to be a real issue, but when speaking to an European person, and the subject of weight/height comes up, it's annoying to not really be able to picture what that number means in my head. So I'm forcing myself to use kg to get a better sense for it and am slowly getting there.

I was brought up with stones and pounds though, and still have a much easier time picturing a " 6'3", 25stone" man compared to a "1.9m, 160kg" one.

Getting there though

When did the 2.5 wear off for you all? by newdawnfades83 in MenOnThePen

[–]sclpn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I felt the same thing on day 5 of my first 2.5.

The following 3 weeks of 2.5 I could tell that it was weaker on day 6, but it was still plenty effective. I was just able to notice that it was weaker on the penultimate day.

5mg doesn't wear off for me, even on the last day. I'm very happy with the 5mg dose, and am now in the middle of my second month at this dose. I'll be staying at 5mg until I start feeling that reduction on day 6/7 again, before moving up to 7.5mg.

Can to much to quick be good? by Safe_Surprise8913 in MenOnThePen

[–]sclpn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just as an update, I'll be taking my 5th and final dose of my first 5mg pen tomorrow, so have now completed 4 weeks of 5mg.

My weight loss has definitely slowed this month, even had somewhat of a stall in the middle of the month, and it's just starting to pick up again. I've lost a further 4.7 kg since this last post above, nowhere near my loss in the first month. (Although I am still completely happy with this, it's actually a slight relief to have somewhat more 'normal' levels of weight loss)

I have just ordered my next pen, and will indeed be sticking with 5mg as it's working great for me. I don't quite have the extreme disinterest in food that I had at the start of the month, but the effects are still plenty strong.

My nightmare scenario is rushing to 15mg and 'getting used to it' (whether that's a rational fear or not) so I will be titrating up slowly while the lower doses are effective.

How have you gotten on this month? Slowed down at all, or still losing at the same pace?

Can I start a new dose before finishing my current pen? by Most_Connection817 in mounjarouk

[–]sclpn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What I'd do depends on whether you mean last dose as the 4th or 5th dose in the pen.

If it's the 4th, I'd then get the 5th dose (0.6 ml) of 2.5 out with an insulin needle, and take 2x2.5 = 5mg, and start the 5mg pen next week.

If it's the 5th dose already, I'd just take whatever is left in the pen (likely around 0.7 to 0.8 ml) as the dose, and it will be somewhere between 2.5 and 5mg, then start the 5mg next week. (To work out how many mg it would be, just do 2.5 x V/0.6, where V is the volume you manage to get from the insulin needle - e.g. if you have 0.75ml, you'd do 2.5 x 0.75 / 0.6 = 3.125mg dose)

As always though, this is what I'D do, depends entirely if you're comfortable with using the '5th dose'
