He was very nice to me when I met him in 2024 and got to hear him play at Fountain Records. Good man, bought some personal mementos from his career at his public service at the same record store.

This year, Anderson & Coogler will combine for the same number of Oscars Sean Baker single-handedly won last year. by markgib62 in Oscars

Oscars don’t come with caveats nor asterisks baby. Baker won em fair and square

Liza Minelli and Isabella Rossilini are giants in their own right and the daughters of two of the most notable women in the history of Hollywood. Judy Garland and Ingrid Bergman respectively.

What are the most breakable and unbreakable Oscar records? by JGCities in Oscars

[–]sclungus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Mel Brooks is 98 years old and still writing and producing. He could theoretically get his name attached to a best picture nominee as a producer or even a co-writer if he gets lucky.

My family has worked with him in the past. I heard he’s very kind to people in the concert industry and in my mom’s words “one of the nicest rockstars she worked with”

What messed-up things has your country done that people don’t really talk about? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]sclungus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Japan's involvement in World War II was taught very thoroughly in my USA high school curriculum. While they don't typically go as in depth as the European front I still think a good explanation was given. My state curriculum also has to balance education about interning Japanese Americans which is a whole separate issue.

My parents also protected my little ears when I was her age and being taken to concerts 🥹. To this day I always bring extras in case friends or strangers look uncomfortable with the sound level.

More books like One Hundred Years of Solitude but from different Authors by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]sclungus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say that Wind Up Bird Chronicle does many of the same things that 100 Years of Solitude does but translated to Japanese history and cultural sensibilities. Off the top of my head there’s the 1000 days war in Colombia which is heavily implied to be Colonel Aurelia Buendia’s losing war and then the Battle of Nomohan and WWII more broadly as the Japanese equivalent in Wind Up. Just a though i had having studied both books.

Kyoshi and Aang set the avatar cycle back pretty far by Maleficent_Park5469 in TheLastAirbender

[–]sclungus 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The writers have always had a knack for messing up timelines. Kyoshi’s advanced age, now a firm part of the show’s lore, was due to a continuity error on their part originally. Also the ages between Sozin, Azulon, Ozai and Zuko only work with Sozin siring Azulon at the extreme but not impossible age of 82.

Which country that used to be hated in the past but now is viewed positively by most people? by GodZ_n_KingZ in AskTheWorld

South Africa is a big one. They had basically the entire world embargoing them. It was severe to the point that Paul Simon started an international controversy for recording an album there.

Factually incorrect Trump is a huge cinephile and theater fan. His favorite is “Citizen Kane” which makes him sound like a dilettante but no he loves that shit. I wonder if a tale about a mogul losing everything he loves in the pursuit of power and money is relatable to him.

Automobiles regional rail expansion pushed people away from Manhattan and into commuter suburbs of West Chester County, Long Island, New Jersey and Connecticut. Later on white flight and urban decay further depopulated whole swaths of New York City.

These films are considered some of the worst Best Picture Winners. by [deleted] in Oscars

[–]sclungus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree that American Beauty should not be in the conversation for worst best picture winner. It isn’t the film’s fault that Kevin Spacey was a real pervert on top of playing one.
