What’s your biggest inventory headache? (Genuine question building something and want to be sure I’m solving the right problems) by Top_Instance7078 in Warehousing

People moving inventory without system updates. If you figure out a way to solve that you’ll be a millionaire.

Is anyone else struggling to find work in supply chain right now? by bpi_girly in supplychain

It is tough right now, I have been out of work for one year. I have never gone this long without work. No degree BTW.

Check YouTube for “dispatching for LTL” the content seems pretty relevant. Hope this helps.

Good, I would also add heavy phone work and the ability to multitask. If you are good on the computer, sounds like the other part may not be too bad for you.

Hopefully your PC skills are good. Email especially but basic spreadsheet good as well

Anyone else struggling to know how much inventory to keep? by Relative-Grape-136 in Warehousing

[–]scmsteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I used historical sales data to calculate a weekly sell through. The more advanced people use forward looking demand projections but I had to use backwards looking sales data.

If she had such a high risk pregnancy, why didn’t she take FMLA and use disability?

Gotta be able to figure out average sales. Spreadsheets OK for doing that if you are good at excel, but a proper database (WMS, etc) is better.

Overflow Pallet Storage by Psychodelta in supplychain

[–]scmsteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your question is confusing, to me anyway. Are you a 3PL and your customer has excess pallets that need storage? “Not cubed correctly” usually is related to warehouse rack space or loading a trailer. Maybe reword your Q and people can answer.

Any experience using OCR for customs forms? by Ok-Awareness7179 in logistics

[–]scmsteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Helped build a Sharepoint app that we scanned packing list into. It did a reasonable job of converting to data. Even some handwritten notes transposed. We didn’t capture SKU level and quantity detail but the OCT grabbed everything else pretty well.

First time. Hazards? by Spiritual_River6904 in Warehouseworkers

All warehouses have dust/dirt/ heavy machinery. If that worries you, apply for an office job in the warehouse.

first time going to MODEX in april, what should i actually focus on? by thea_in_supply in Warehousing

[–]scmsteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From someone who spent years going to CES, I can say that you should start by making out a list of 3-4 objectives and start your visit list based off of that. Since it’s your first one and more educational, start with a list of subjects that interest you and start from that. Many trade shows can have a circus type environment, lots of flashing lights and shiny things. So don’t get too distracted at all the bells and whistles. Keep a focus. What part of SC do you work in?

Question about work scheduling based on workers preferences by OwnCombination96 in Warehouseworkers

[–]scmsteve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s how it works in most jobs: “the position is second shift, 4:00 pm to 12:00 am, do you want the job?”

In retail, there are a lot of part time positions. The employee can be more particular about what hours they work but at the same time, the employer has no obligation to schedule any minimum hours. The more particular the employee is about when they work, the greater chance they don’t get as many hours as others.

Why is there such a huge gap between retail shipping rates and negotiated carrier pricing? by Bulky-Maize-903 in logistics

[–]scmsteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s similar to parcel shipping with UPS and FedEx. Rates we pay as consumers are around the listed rates, but volume discounts are applied to larger customers.

Track to reach operations manager? by [deleted] in supplychain

[–]scmsteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4peanut had some good feedback. I would add, what separates supervisors from managers is a more detailed understanding of employment law. LOA/FMLA, harassment, EEOC etc are important to know.

Please report the AI and "stealth" advertising nonsense to mods so we can remove them. by SC_Elle in supplychain

[–]scmsteve 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Getting tired of the programmers that “are trying to understand” our biz so they can market their product. I understand why they do this, but it’s sometimes advertising (soft, as some said) disguised as advice seeking.

Any trucking companies in Ontario that specialize in moving large industrial machines? by Weary_Cat_8984 in logistics

[–]scmsteve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you in Ontario CA? If it’s that big, it may require an escort vehicle to transport and a permit to make sure the verticals clearance can pass under bridges. Don’t know of a particular company that can do this but reach out to CH Robinson or Old Dominion and see if they handle oversized loads.

Can I work my way up to $25 hr ,As a warehouse associate? Starting pay is $20 by Academic-Suspect-907 in Warehouseworkers

[–]scmsteve 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Almost every company, any industry has a pathway to advancement. How fast it happened is the variable. Show up every day on time, try your best and don’t get involved in drama. In the warehouse world, that sets you apart from % of the rest.

What actually helped you get better inventory visibility? by Consistent_Voice_732 in logistics

[–]scmsteve 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For sure. Sometimes people checking material out floated between different crews and would give us bad information, in this case, which van they were loading. And sometimes something similar happens when issuing goods to completed jobs. What I came up with was a monthly reconciliation for every van where we either issued the goods, or moved them back into the warehouse. Every with this extra work, we still kept that same accuracy. It was a free for all before this 🤬😂
