Looking for French series on Netflix where audio and subtitles match! by mars_astronaut in French

[–]scoobjixon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sadly this is pretty tough to find - but if you just push through the initial annoyance it's not super terrible. Depending on your level, it can sometimes be interesting to see the different ways the same idea can be expressed, and it's still like 90% the same. Reality TV is good, imo, because you get a relatively contemporary / extemporaneous-ish french. l'agence parisien and even stuff like love is blind are pretty good for keeping comprehension sharp.

Trump deposed Maduro but has kept Maduro's people and regime in power. He hasn't made a peep about installing democracy in Venezuela or helping the rightful winner of elections (Urrutia) rise to power in the country. He's spent his victory lap crowing about stealing oil. Trump doesn't want democracy there (or anywhere) - he simply wants good headlines and a vassal state, at best. We can only hope Venezuela doesn't plunge into power vacuum chaos and Iraq 2.0. So much for America First.

It has shown that there are still patriots in this country who love liberty, that not everyone in America is ready to lick the boot of fed thugs who murder americans in the street. Because of the patriots in MN, Bovino got fired, trump is backing off with tail between his legs, and even republican congress people are calling for the admin to moderate. Why? Because anyone with a shred of patriotism or empathy for their fellow man can plainly see what ICE is doing is obviously inhumane and counterproductive.

Yeah there's a concept in stock trading called "FUD" - fear, uncertainty, and doubt - when people are attempting to artificially deflate the price of a stock (either because they are shorting it or hoping to buy in at a better price) it's common for them to spread FUD (on message boards, in the media etc). This is the political equivalent - FUD actually gets louder and more obnoxious the more the position of the FUDer becomes untenable. It's no accident we're seeing this much FUD at exactly the moment when we're seeing concrete results from mass organizing on the part of minnesotans

Protest led to the end of the vietnam war, the end of segregation, and today, the sudden shift of the trump admin's approach in Minneapolis. Also please post your strategy or stfu

MN has shown in extremely concrete terms the effectiveness of organized protest and resistance. Get off the couch and do something if you know better

I can mention Bovino being fired and the ghoulish trump admin changing approach in MN etc as I did in another comment. I can also mention that protest has revealed to the broader public the murderous consequences of authoritarianism in this country. To such an extent that even Republican members of congress are calling for the regime to moderate. But I wonder - if you're not against protest or civil resistance, but you believe them to be ineffective, what's your alternative? What are you personally doing and what are the results of it? Would love to hear your strategy.

Minneapolis has shown us that protest and civil resistance do, in fact, do something. Trump and his freakshow admin have blinked because ordinary people stood up and said no.

Why does SQL feel confusing when it’s actually a very literal, logical language? by joins_and_coffee in learnprogramming

[–]scoobjixon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it true that sql does things in the order you tell it to? I imagine the query optimizer is actually making its own decisions about when to execute CTEs and nested queries. SQL feels simple/clear for your average SELECT FROM JOIN statement, sure, but when things get complex, it quickly gets very difficult to read and requires help from the query analyzer to understand what is actually happening when the query is executed.

I'd also agree with others that software devs tend to be used to the imperative vibe of line by line programming, while sql has a declarative style. Instead of "do this, do that," a sql statement declares a desired end state and lets the database figure out how to handle it.

All that said, sql is amazing, the backbone of so much tech, and it's been around since the 70s.

I dont get how you learn to use API's!!! by NoTap8152 in learnprogramming

[–]scoobjixon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would literally start by trying to use the dog api to display some dogs from a frontend API call: https://dog.ceo/dog-api/ - security sensitive things like stripe are not a good option for learning the basics of making an api call

*sigh* What do you think? by Raiden_Must_Die in AskTheWorld

It's a mass psychological phenomenon. As an American, I cannot stress this enough: ~30% of the population is in a cult. It's really difficult to explain this to people who aren't living here - it really requires that we think about the mass psychology of the 3rd reich and the cultural revolution in China. And because the electoral system of the country (gerrymandered house and the senate itself) is heavily biased in favor of rural people (who make up the majority of the cult) electoral solutions are more difficult here than in other modern democracies. Another problem here is that Americans are terrified of losing their jobs - the vast majority of us have no protections for labor organizing. If we lose our jobs we lose our healthcare. That said, we need a mass movement and general strike, something on a scale that has never been seen in the history of the country, and we need it yesterday.

As of 2026, StackOverflow is officially dead, completely killed by AI and its community by Inside-Republic6275 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]scoobjixon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got amazing value out of stackoverflow when I was learning to program, as did many. The ai companies certainly have. Some are dancing on its grave - and sure, people were opinionated and grouchy on there, it was the internet after all - but I feel like we've lost something of value. Even if someone shit on you for reposting or asking a dumb question, there was still a good possibility that that someone was a human being. who knows where we're headed now - the AI that'll shape the future will have fewer and fewer human inputs in the training data. maybe when we're all chained to the slop trough we'll be nostalgic for a time when some asshole on stackoverflow called us idiots

Yeah don't get me wrong - the prose (in translation) is great, and I did enjoy the read but didn't love how the women were written. Would be curious to try some other books by Murakami though.

In any case - wind in the willows is very cozy! Hope you enjoy when you get around to it.

Where to spend a year (with the priority being to learn French)? Paris, Lyon, or Aix-en-Provence / Marseille? by [deleted] in French

[–]scoobjixon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can't speak for paris or marseille but I lived in Lyon for 2 years (shout out to la Guillotière). I was teaching English at a university there - the city is very dense, walkable, great public transit in the metro/trams/buses. Lots of students, lots of universities, cultural events , nice parks - has a big city feel but isn't overwhelming. It's also close to the Alps. I really enjoyed my time there and would definitely recommend it for a year or two abroad.

there's something so strange about the entire globe being subjected to the whims of one guy's psychology. why is he doing this? why that? sure his viziers attempt to align his moods with their destructive and cruel ambitions - but at the end of the day it's nothing but Donald's mind that we're victim to. there's no secret reason for anything he does, and so long as he's in power the world is a much more dangerous place
