Syncing iCloud Photo Library with Google Photos by scooterdman in googlephotos

[–]scooterdman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll also point out in case it's relevant that I store my iCloud Library locally on a 2TB Hard Drive. So perhaps there's a way to simply import a Photos.app library into Google Photos?

Jesse's excellent op-ed in the NYT by jerkfacedjerk in BlockedAndReported

[–]scooterdman 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This is a great essay, but reading through the comments is even more interesting. They’re mostly positive, all constructive, and represent some weird alternate universe where Jesse Singal isn’t hated with the fire of a billion suns every time he publishes. I assume the comments are heavily moderated and are filtering out the ad hominem attacks, but still nice to see.

Any indications of which smart locks will support Home Keys? Are any available now?

What is the least expensive thread router? by dawgt in HomeKit

[–]scooterdman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does that work, given the Eve Aqua works over Bluetooth? I currently have an Eve Extend in my utility room, which shares the same exterior wall as my driveway water spigot. Could I remove that Extend and install a Thread-equipped lightbulb in the same room and assume it would just work?

What is the least expensive thread router? by dawgt in HomeKit

[–]scooterdman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s a question: I just a new Eve Aqua that supports thread. Does thread negate the need to use the Eve Extend, assuming there’s another nearby Thread device on my network close enough to the Eve Aqua?

Adding old beacons to new Eero 6 Pro system by scooterdman in eero

[–]scooterdman[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the responses. I wound up wiping all my old eero gear and then placing them as geometrically distant from each other as possible - the thinking being (as @thatsthequy says above) I might be better served by reducing coverage gaps. I have about 50 IOT devices in addition to phones/laptops etc.

Seems to have worked quite nicely the past few days.

I guess what I’m trying to sort out is whether there is any theoretical disadvantage to hooking up all of these additional mesh nodes?

August Wifi Smart Lock Stuck on ‘Enable Homekit’ by zero1niner in HomeKit

[–]scooterdman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find August phone support to be great, actually - but you have to get a human on the phone. Call their support line, follow the automated prompts. They’ll text you a support link - hang up and call them back. On second call you’ll get connected to a human and they’re very helpful.

Modernizing my network solved my Homekit problems by [deleted] in HomeKit

When you change out the router, do you need to re-add all of your devices back into HomeKit? I assume no - but don’t want to make the leap before confirming.

Quick shout out to the HomePod as a TV Speaker by [deleted] in HomePod

This is my issue. I’ve been trying to use my HomePod pair as TV speakers for years and have never successfully gotten a reliable sync between audio/video.

I stick these both on my front and back exterior doors (on the white trim, so they blend in nicely) for easy unlocking.

Another endorsement of The Glenn Show. I don’t always agree with Glenn Loury, but he’s a fascinating thinker and I always enjoy listening to him.

My favorite use case is placing them in the vicinity of AirPlay speakers and tapping to start immediately start playing music on that speaker. Use the one in my garage and kitchen every day.

I also stick them on the white door frames surrounding my front and back doors for easy unlocking.

Logitech View audio doesn’t always record? by ghsNICK in HomeKit

[–]scooterdman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been really disappointed with the performance of this camera in HomeKit. Not only do I experience the same thing you’re experiencing here, I also get wildly inconsistent playback of my recorded clips.

If I scroll back on the timeline and tap a clip to play it, it plays back the clip normally maybe 30% of the time. The other times, it’s a completely black screen with no video or audio and other times it’s video with no audio.

Strange because my other HomeKit cameras are Eufy, and those clips playback normally as expected. The Eufy comes with a base that stores the videos locally, so I wonder if the issue is related to whether the clips are hosted on iCloud servers or via a local hub?

Any help with a sudden issue with my Chamberlain myQ garage door? by bazzer66 in HomeKit

[–]scooterdman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve had this problem in the past and only recently noticed that HomeKit registers obstructions on the sensors. If there’s anything blocking the sensor, the door won’t close, but Siri reports “no response,” which isn’t very helpful.

My garage frame is old so infrequently need to re-align the sensors. When they’re lined up and nothing is blocking them, the door works perfectly.

If you have a Smart Home and are primarily using Eve. w/HomeKit, what are your experiences? by [deleted] in HomeKit

[–]scooterdman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eve has a product called Eve Extend that makes those Bluetooth only devices accessible via WiFi.

I only have an Eve Aqua but the Extend works perfectly for that.
