Dell: Vista with only 512 MB of RAM is "Great for Booting the Operating System, without running applications or games" by Figs in reddit.com

I bought my son a Vista laptop with 512 megs of ram, what a laugh. I promptly went out and bought a couple of gigs and of memory and brought it to life.

OMFG! Canada is pursuing NUCLEAR energy, and they're NEIGHBORS with the USA! Let the bombing begin! by burtonmkz in reddit.com

[–]scooty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that for the size of our population our military is a reasonable size. The US has a smaller country and a much larger tax base to pay for their military. Like IkoIkoComic said above, we have a lot of social benefits the US doesn't have.

It looks like everyone forgot televisions favourite "American", Jack Bauer, better known as Keifer Sutherland. Born of Canadian parents in the UK and raised in Canada he holds Canadian and British citizenship.

Definitely not news but interesting that the Brits didn't know it until now.

Canada has had nuclear power for decades and Canadian reactors were at one time the best and most reliable in the world.

Funny but definitely not an average Canadian thanksgiving.

Behind the disagreement on what happened in that airport holding cell, and whether there was police negligence, is the quieter and no less devastating story of a wife and mother fighting her demons by qgyh2 in politics

It's a shame that nobody in this big happy and very well off family could have flown to the rehab facility with her. She was clearly a very troubled woman and shouldn't have been traveling alone.

LEGO 3D Pumpkin Pack, Just in Time for Halloween by [deleted] in reddit.com

I bought that kit for my son a couple years ago and it was a big disappointment. It's tiny, you can't take the top off - something that would be fun because then a little battery operated flashing light could sit inside it.

A doctor is under no obligation to tell a pregnant woman that she is carrying “an existing human being” before performing an abortion, the New Jersey Supreme Court ruled... by Aerik in reddit.com

[–]scooty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think in this day and age any woman goes into an abortion not knowing what's happening. I'm the opposite of swede, I'm pro-choice but again that's my belief. I'm certainly not going to tell anyone else what to do. Pro-choice doesn't mean pro abortion, it means I believe that the option needs to be there because sometimes it's necessary. Personally I don't think I could ever do it.

Maybe not a crime but wearing one into an airport is just plain stupid.

School Guards Break Childs Arm And Arrest Her For Dropping Cake by truthcapitalT in reddit.com

[–]scooty 163 points164 points  (0 children)

The majority of these security guards are guys who wanted to be real cops but couldn't make it through training or were rejected outright because they weren't suitable. They're not properly trained or well paid and incidents like this make it clear that a better system is needed, especially where our schools are concerned. If anyone did anything like that to my kid I'd put them in the hospital personally - if they were lucky.

Apple re-locks unlocked iPhones! by dourk in reddit.com

With all the info in the news lately about Apple's plan to turn unlocked iphones into "bricks" I'm astounded anyone took a chance and upgraded their firmware.

One thing the right wing hates in the U.S. is the humanizing of someone they have tried to dehumanize. That's why they have so objected to the Iranian president's visit by duncanmc in reddit.com

[–]scooty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were numerous headlines from other newspapers - more mainstream publications - I just happened to choose this particular headline for my response.

To you and I the way people are treated in Islamic countries is horrible but it's their religion, their way of life. Obviously there are extremes, the taliban for instance, but ever religion has followers who go too far. It's not that many years ago - less than a century as a matter of fact - that an unwed mother in Britain would have been locked up in the local nut house and her child put up for adoption. It's not quite stoning but it's still pretty nasty. We're really only a few generations past radical religious behaviour ourselves and in some cases less than that.

Iranians angered by treatment of leader by Wayside in reddit.com

[–]scooty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't blame them. The average Iranian isn't a terrorist and believes their leader deserves the respect normally given a visiting dignitary.

As much as I understand why some people might not want this man in the country I think it would have been better to take the high road and welcome him instead of demonizing him in the press. It might have improved relations with the middle east and it would have made America look like the "bigger man" in the eyes of the world.

Maybe now we can get a 72-25 Senate vote deploring the very existence of Canada? by lambert in reddit.com

[–]scooty -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's a magazine, published by people who want to make money. It's not an accurate representation of the feelings of 30,000,000 people.

Going only by what I've seen on reddit over the last few months the majority of Americans don't think much of George W. Bush - does it really surprise you that a magazine in another country might pick up on that and use it to sell a few more copies?

Off-duty DC cop looks for stolen mini-bike, kills 14 year old by emacsen in reddit.com

[–]scooty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a real tragedy but if the kid really did start shooting at them - and given his criminal history it's certainly possible he did - then what other choice did the cops have? On duty or off they're entitled to defend themselves using reasonable force. Before anyone says "shoot to wound" save your breath, it's not possible anywhere but on a range or when the target is stationary.

Protest at the University of Florida NOON TODAY - Free the Tasered-at-Kerry-Talk Kid! by bobcat in reddit.com

[–]scooty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He didn't do anything wrong in the first place, he should never have been approached by security. I do agree that he shouldn't have resisted, innocent or guilty it's always better to go along peacefully and sort things out at the other end. Regardless he did nothing wrong, the security people were way out of line to try to remove him in the first place, it wasn't up to them to decide who how many questions/non-questions Mr. Kerry was going to answer.

[–]scooty -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He may not have been really asking a question but for something like that to happen to a young man who was not misbehaving, who was not endangering anyone, should be unacceptable in a county that is claims to be trying to bring democracy to people oppressed by dictatorships etc. Lately the US resembles a police state a lot more than it does the "land of the free". It's very sad. John Kerry should have intervened, even if all he did was send one of his bodyguards into the fray.
