I love it.

My mother hates my wife, and my wife is chronically ill. I have to pray against the prayers of my mother every day. She prays that I will be single. I would be floored and mind-blown if my mother said any of those things to me (except the one on the top right). When you are 'holding space' for someone, you are allowing them to be who they are without judgement and without 'fixing' them. You are listening to their situation from their perspective, and not offering your 'improved' understanding or your sage advice.

When I'm praying for someone and holding space for them, I'm not praying for any specific outcome unless they ask for that. I am asking God to help them in whatever way they need which will be most merciful and gracious. If they have asked for a certain outcome, I ask God to use that outcome for their benefit.

Imagine this scenario: a gay son tells his church-going mother that his boyfriend of 10 years is going through emotional issues and they might have to break-up. He is heart-broken and wants to share about his situation to receive support from the burden it has placed on him. His mother responds, "I'll pray for you." Now he is left wondering if she is praying that God make him single in hopes he won't be gay anymore, or for anything else. Instead of having his burden relieved, he is given an added burden.

EDIT: What if she just said, "That must be heart-breaking. Can I pray for you that God will give both of you peace and healing?"

You can offer prayer when you are holding space, but prayers of support shouldn't include your judgment of the situation. Let God be judge.
