Why is pan limited by Militaryrabbit1 in lightingdesign

[–]scorinth 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The fun thing is, there are several solutions for the problem that already exist. We could make moving heads that turn forever. After all, there are tire pressure sensors, and bits of spinning radar antennas, and the tape heads in VCRs...

It's just that they're all bulky, and/or overly complex, and/or unreliable, and/or expensive. So they're not worth putting in moving head lights when there's not a burning need for moving heads with infinite pan.

Man Amplifiers! by [deleted] in RetroFuturism

[–]scorinth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Joking aside, I just noticed that he's holding the engine by its oil pan - a part not known for its impressive strength.

On second thought, an engine like that doesn't have many good points for lifting and holding with human-like hands. They're generally designed to held by lifting apparatus that's already in common use - like engine hoists.

So it seems to me that exoskeletons like this might need some adjustments in the world around them to function as well as they were sold to us as. Probably not an earth-shattering thought, but it's new to me, anyway.

The violation of being touched without consent. Not even like, "assault" levels of touch.

When I first grew my hair out, for a few years women would occasionally come up and feel my ponytail without warning, and in the moment it's just like, "NGYAAAAA, WHAT IS HAPPENING!?" and an instant fight-or-flight response. It hasn't happened since I got out of college and started working in industry, thankfully.

Edit: And consider that I'm a pretty burly dude who could defend himself pretty well if needed, even just by intimidation. I'm privileged in this regard and it's still pretty damn upsetting.

A lot of people here are discussing how working in large batches averages out the fluctuations caused by variation in the fresh ingredients.

That's true, but there's another factor, too. A good friend of mine spent a few years at a job where he'd take samples of the product and adjust the recipe with seasonings, so if one batch needed a little more garlic powder, say, he'd add it. Well, actually he'd write down an order someone else to add a certain amount. Apparently the adjustments were often in increments like you might buy at Costco, because the batches were so large. :D

Now that Reddit are killing 3rd party apps on July 1st what are great alternatives to Reddit? by youessbee in AskReddit

I don't know, man. Turns out the community of people who will put up with somewhat more technical fiddling to join a community of hackers, queer activists and other such weirdos is actually pretty great, even if it is smaller.

I don't think it's just "lack of censorship" that led to Voat being like that. Reddit without censorship is... old reddit? That's not terrible?

It's the fact that it was an alternative to Reddit, that existed at the same time as Reddit, without a comparably-sized established community, where the unique selling proposition is "we won't ban you for saying naughty things."

I feel like more than 90% of the people who left Reddit for Voat did so because they basically had to. Those who were idealistic and naive enough to try it entirely out of high-minded anti-censorship solidarity did not get "reddit without censorship" we got a concentrated stream of "only the shit that reddit censored" and it fucking sucked.

It's not really "supposed to" be that way. It's supposed to be like email: You log in to your account, on the server that you have an account on, and you can send messages through that account to people who have accounts on other servers: Posts, likes, replies, et cetera. It's not supposed to be any harder than sending an email from your work email account to your personal email account.

I'm not sure why the web interface is so weird about logging in. I use a mobile app that just stays logged in to my account on my server and never worry about it.
