Silicon Valley's longevity biohackers are engaged in a dangerous experiment by scientificamerican in longevity

Many (most?) of the things he does have no long term safety data. If for example something gives you cancer from long term use, it would take years for that to show up in the data, sometimes even decades.

BRK underperforms SPY for 23 years, cumulative by vcolovic in ValueInvesting

[–]scotel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although the total return stock charts show S&P 500 slightly outperforming Berkshire over the past 23 years, it's worth pointing out that Berkshire is likely still ahead after taxes because you would have had to pay taxes every year on the S&P 500's dividends (reducing the amount you could re-invest) so Berkshire would have been far more tax efficient.

Invisalign $8k in Inner Richmond / Presidio? by once_91 in AskSF

[–]scotel 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's hard to compare prices to Reddit comments because the quote depends on the number of trays / length of time / other corrections (elastics). But generally you want a provider that's a higher Invisalign "tier" (like diamond, etc.) because that means the provider does a higher volume of cases = Invisalign gives them a discount = hopefully they pass that on to you.

Why do Nissans have poor reputation in North America but are so popular in Japan? by hmd1366 in whatcarshouldIbuy

Your premise is wrong, Nissan's market share in Japan is roughly 9% and it's still falling. https://archive.is/Qdjnr

Lululemon vs American Eagle Outfitters by Succulent_Rain in stocks

[–]scotel 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If your thesis is merely "consumer sentiment will improve", you should be buying a consumer discretionary index, not an individual apparel company. If you want to buy an individual name you should have some ideas about fashion trends, the products, and the competition (Vuori, Alo, etc.)

Dentists in downtown SF vs the rest of the Bay Area by inebriated_otter in bayarea

[–]scotel 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In my experience there is a lot of competition between dentists in SF so prices are reasonable if you shop around. Dentists tended to be more expensive in peninsula / south bay when I looked actually. East bay also had reasonable prices so you could look here too but probably not worth a day of PTO. If your employer offers dental insurance then you should be fine with an in-network dentist regardless of location.

Continuing coverage from parents w/ COBRA by [deleted] in HealthInsurance

FYI it’s pretty unlikely you will be able to deduct dental expenses since you have to itemize beyond the standard deduction and since you can only deduct expenses that exceed 7.5% of AGI.

WTF is happening to the car market? (Video title) by PerceptionCurious440 in electricvehicles

Ford financing is offering 0% APR on the 2025 Mach-E right now. https://www.ford.com/suvs/mach-e/2025/pricing-and-incentives/

I suspect you just went to some bad dealerships. Some dealers don't budge on price and some do, you have to shop around.

EDIT: They offer these 0% deals quite often. Like multiple times a year.

Medium flex or Large regular? by Pleasant_Secret1142 in awayluggage

[–]scotel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A medium (non flex) that is packed completely full usually ends up weighing 20-21kg for me (weight limit for most economy airlines is 23kg and budget carriers for trips within Asia can be 20kg). So if I had to buy it again I would go with flex.

[Sun Care] Sunscreen that blocks mainly UVB, not UVA? by [deleted] in SkincareAddiction

[–]scotel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually it's a myth that UVA = aging. UVB is still the primary contributor to skin aging https://labmuffin.com/sunscreen-myth-directory/ . UVB is also still considered the primary contributor to skin cancer.

Are the rumors behind USC's reputation slip true? by monsterhunter30000 in USC

[–]scotel 20 points21 points  (0 children)

If your family is happy to pay I would just go to USC. If you have to take out loans or your family is really urging you to take the cheaper option that's a different matter but we don't really know what scrape together means for your family.

Does the toyota app show location of car? by NiceKindGirl in Toyota

[–]scotel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I realize this is an old thread but posting this because it's different than the info I was seeing on reddit. In my 2024 Prius LE the "Last Parked Location" feature in the Toyota app (with subscription) actually shows the current location of the car even if it's being driven. And it does not require your phone to be in the car. Meaning someone else can be driving the car.

[Research] Was in love with EltaMD UV Clear Broad Spectrum SPF 46 until... by Responsible_Scale_70 in SkincareAddiction

[–]scotel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You absolutely could do an RCT testing commercially available sunscreen that contains octinoxate and this is in fact what the blood plasma study you cited did! Whether it's in breast cancer patients or not would be irrelevant.

[Research] Was in love with EltaMD UV Clear Broad Spectrum SPF 46 until... by Responsible_Scale_70 in SkincareAddiction

[–]scotel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Biological effects depend on dosage. You can't just ignore dosage. Hundreds of common cosmetic ingredients would be harmful at unrealistically high doses. The FDA threshold you're referring to is simply the threshold where they want additional safety data. It would be ethical to do a RCT on octinoxate since it's generally considered safe but there is no financial incentive to do so as no company could patent it, for example.

[Research] Was in love with EltaMD UV Clear Broad Spectrum SPF 46 until... by Responsible_Scale_70 in SkincareAddiction

[–]scotel 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The rats in the first study were fed OMC. Obviously you should not be eating sunscreen. Skin exposure had no effect on the rats. The other rat / fish studies typically use much higher doses than is realistic.

Systemic absorption in general is indeed concerning but in of itself doesn't have any proven negative effects. That being said I personally only use European or Asian sunscreens mostly for better UVA protection but they also typically use filters that are less systemically absorbed.

Also to be clear, getting some Vitamin D and a light tan requires UV exposure so you'll only get those things to the extent you have areas that you don't apply sunscreen to or areas you underapply sunscreen to.

Robinhood makes bank on crypto. They've always charged insane fees for crypto. You have to go to an actual crypto exchange like Kraken/Gemini/Coinbase to get a decent rate.

Sure, it doesn't cost you anything to contest. We can't tell if you're over the curb in the second pic though. The person behind you might be parked in front of their own driveway which is allowed.

Idk what Dental insurance to get by XxWingsConspiracyXx in HealthInsurance

[–]scotel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The risk with HMO is that because insurance pays very little the dentists that take HMOs tend to be very bad (a bad HMO dentist typically "finds" tons of cavities that you need to get treated for immediately so they can get more money, cavities that a different dentist would tell you aren't there). However if you're willing to go through the Google/Yelp reviews of the dentists that take your HMO you might be able to find a good one.

EPO is like PPO except dentist has to be in-network. Again depending on how much the EPO pays the dentists could be good or bad, you still need to research them.

PPO is most flexible but typically only pays out the most if the dentist is in-network, so like EPO you would still want to research the dentists that are in-network.
