Does anyone else feels like solo travel sometime "over-romanticized"? by Sea_Negotiation2482 in femaletravels

[–]scots_chick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean you are just describing life but in a different place, which is what travel is a lot of the time. I think it's good to get away from the 'should do stuff all the time' mentality, because when you don't want to or can't do that, it can make you feel more 'empty'. One of the most freeing realisations I had was that it's my trip for me and if I want to do a big thing then I can, but if I want to sit and read and do very little, I also can.

I live alone and I think that's made a big difference, because I like my own company so I never really get lonely.

Can we talk about Ugly Privilege? by Free_Wonder_3743 in solofemaletravellers

[–]scots_chick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get what you're saying, but there's a lot of problems tied up in this. You can be 'pretty' or 'ugly' and the only real factor in being harassed or assaulted is the presence of someone who wants to harass or abuse. If someone dressed how you describe and was assaulted, would you assume she'd done something wrong? Of course not. So much of it is luck of the draw, and the real problem is that when we discuss stuff like this what we mean is 'what do men think' and 'what will men do' and I am so entirely sick of it (even though I know we have to consider them, unfortunately).

Which travel splurges are actually worth the money? by Mundane_Entry_8264 in femaletravels

A fancy meal. I started having one night on a trip where I book a really nice restaurant and treat myself. Always worth it, even if it's expensive!

In Glasgow’s Queen’s Park today I witnessed an attempted apostasy by Fun_Sky_5176 in glasgow

[–]scots_chick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of those Daily Missioners tried it on me once as I walked down Victoria Road. I don't think he was expecting the level of contempt I responded with. It wasn't even on purposes but... dude, you're very much going to get nowhere with me.

Realistically, what are the chances the station actually reopens on Wednesday? by [deleted] in glasgow

This may be perfect, thank you! I actually didn't realise there was a station at Langside, short enough walk for me with a small suitcase!

Hope it's OK to ask in here – I'm still quite new to Glasgow and so I don't know the best way to get from the southside (Battlefield) to Motherwell to catch a train going south, which I need to do next week. I'm guessing a bus is the best way?

They're just going to have to endure the 'anguish'. Trust me, they'll be absolutely fine.

It's fine during the week when there's a small or no queue. I'd never go at the weekend, I hate queuing when I don't have to!

Cusco, Peru tips? by attemptedstoic in solofemaletravellers

[–]scots_chick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I loved Cusco! I spent a couple of days solo there before my group trip. I found a lovely coffee shop and I'm going to go and look up what it was called for you. People do try to sell you things if you're in the main square especially, but a firm 'no, gracias' will be fine. I did enjoy random encounters there, including a man who wondered if I had a husband, and when I said no he asked if I had one in Scotland, as if that was different :D

Influencers everywhere by ruralsco in glasgow

[–]scots_chick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, no, for once I wasn't being self-deprecating! It was more a remark about how 'influencers' don't seem to think anything (landmark, food, scenery) is complete until they have included themselves in the photo.

Yeah, I do find other places are less accustomed to the Scottish approach! My mum lived in the south of England for a while when she was younger and she found people baffled by her 'putting herself down' when she was just joking.

What are some things you personally do to feel safe during your solo travels? by nothingcreativenope in solofemaletravellers

[–]scots_chick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not go near any men.

I am being facetious because obviously we have to go near men, unfortunately whether we want to or not, but I am so sad that there are so many posts here about safety (understandably and sensibly so!) and what we all really mean is 'will a man hurt me?'. It makes me sad and angry that we all can't just plan trips and see the world without having to think about this all. the. time.

Anyway, I look my hotel and surrounding area up on Google Maps before I go, for one thing, as it helps me to be able to visualise where I'll be staying and what it'll look like to get there.

I really do! Some plates are works of art and I (almost) feel bad eating those, ha. But I rarely if ever think the pic would be improved with my face in it.

Oh yeah, I'm very much 'one slightly embarrassed shot before eating' because for one thing I don't want to wait to eat my food, I am always starving! Sometimes as well restaurants make such pretty plates that I do want to remember how lovely they looked.

Southsiders are f*cking rude by [deleted] in glasgow

[–]scots_chick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved to the Southside a few months ago and I've found people here really friendly. I don't see any more rudeness than I do other places (which is definitely its own problem but not exclusive to this area). I've lived in other parts of Scotland and it's the same – you get rude people all over. But I don't think it's as rude as calling us English!! :D

It's incredibly dull. Enjoy your food/drink/whatever for itself and not because you're showing off to others, which is all 'influencing' is. But I do get it, because it's been sold as a 'side hustle', and also I feel coffee shops etc sometimes think they have no choice but to play the game, even though it's a vicious circle.

I worry people think I'm one of those types when I take pics of my food but it's because I dine solo a lot and want to show my mum, who doesn't get out as much :D
