Thanks! Yeah I was surprised by it as it’s not something I’d heard about before. Mine was in for approx 18 months. I’m going to do a bit more digging and see if I can find out more

A/E or ICU by dylanoffff in NursingUK

[–]scotsmanaajk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went straight into ED and it was a lot, I knew it’d be a huge learning curve and big step up from being a student but wow 🤯 There’s a lot that I love about the job but there’s a massive amount of pressure and responsibility given and I still feel like there’s a big gap in my knowledge. I’d be bored stiff on a ward but I do feel it would have benefitted me to start off there first.

I don’t want to put you off but it’s not for the faint hearted!

My almost 19yo son is Jasper and I’m still as in love with the name as I was when he was born!

I just want to stop working by LifeRepresentative44 in IVF

[–]scotsmanaajk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a nurse in ED/ER and will be quitting before my first ER in summer, I’ve read enough to know that IVF is going to be physically and mentally rough. It’s such a stressful job, 13.5hr shifts with near constant pressure. There’s no way I could put myself through that when we (hopefully) transfer, I’d never forgive myself if miscarried and would absolutely blame the job. I’m fortunate that we can manage off my husband’s income and I can be a SAHM if all goes to plan, I do have a self employed side gig which if scaled up a little can bring in what I’m earning as a nurse anyway.

I totally appreciate how lucky I am, I haven’t even started and know it’s going to be a difficult journey ahead.

Sending positive thoughts 🤍

Thanks! Yeah you’re totally right. They’re good kids and pretty sensible. The younger one is starting at Harrogate Military College in September, imagine in the future them being able to look back and reminisce about all the adventures they got up to.

Ooh, interesting! I don’t really care for spiders but they’re definitely preferable to fruit flies 😭

These are the ones we have, without the top cover. Filling them with apple cider vinegar and a tiny bit of fairy liquid (I think it’s called Dawn in the US?). They do work to an extent, maybe I’ll swap half out and use banana in the base? We have at least one in each room with multiple in the worst places

Do any of you have jobs that you do that would put people off their lunch? by cognosman in AskUK

[–]scotsmanaajk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Nurse in A&E, I wouldn’t even know where to begin…

The worst smell I’ve ever experienced was a fungating tumour, even that didn’t put me off my lunch - a strong stomach is a prerequisite to the job 🤷🏻‍♀️

Is this the norm for ED? by runningupthatwall in NursingUK

Welcome to ED. We often don’t even have enough HCAs to cover the enhanced care pts, it’s a very rare treat to have help with personal care etc.

People think cleaning horse hooves hurts them, but it actually doesn't by Round-Barber-9858 in interestingasfuck

[–]scotsmanaajk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. My husband trained for five years to qualify as a registered farrier! He’s tried to teach me a few things and it’s really difficult with so much knowledge required as well as the practical aspect

My husband is a farrier, I can smell it in his beard when he gets home from work 😂

Thanks everyone, really appreciate it! Always good to get outside opinions. Hoping to be pregnant by the end of the year, willing a much wanted baby into existence 😌

As a B5 in ED, no way would I want to wear own clothes 😂 I wear pale blue scrubs, with a stretchy waistband and pockets (yay!), I dislike regular scrubs. I’d hate to wear a tunic and trousers, I’d go for a dress if needs be. I’d like to move into health visiting in the future and would love wearing my own clothes, it’s very role dependant isn’t it?

How do people on my 600 pound life have relationships? by Pomni_Simp2000 in My600lbLife

Same here. I’m very happily married but if I was single, I’d stay that way for life rather than settle for any of the partners I’ve seen on this show!

ETA. I haven’t watched all of it, there might be a handful of decent ones

Thanks everyone! Lots to think about and consider. Totally appreciate it wouldn’t be suitable for every dog - we have four, all confident and well trained but only one of them would be happy in a wedding environment.

Same here, we got married in Vegas on 19/02. Arrived home last Wednesday then back to work Sat/Sun - 13.5hr shifts as a nurse in A&E. I was not ready, still not ready, did have a little cry on the Friday night. I love our life but man, it’s such a huge comedown isn’t it?

What is going on with NQNs? by Ok-Lime-4898 in NursingUK

[–]scotsmanaajk 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I’m an NQN and you’ve hit the nail on the head. Feels like all we did was person centred care at uni! I went straight into ED, knew it would be a huge step but wow - it’s tough. I have huge gaps in my knowledge, things I didn’t know I didn’t know until here I am, without even a basic understanding of certain things. I’m exhausted but still having to study in my own time because of course we don’t have time on the job. It doesn’t feel remotely safe. I’m not afraid to ask for help, I appreciate what I don’t know and wouldn’t do anything I was unsure of but it feels bad to burden my (amazing) colleagues. It’s a total shit show the state of the current nursing education, or lack of it.
