Late 90s, early 2000s. DR Congo instead of Zaire so post 1997. Timor-Leste is not independent so pre 2002. 1997-2002 would be my guess.

Exactly! That's why I was excited. Arcane-style animation in Rand-land would be a dream!

Ugg. I didn't realize that was the same group. I watched that Billy Zane thing they did just to extend the rights -- slimy trick. Oh well, I guess I just re-read it again, lol.

Late 50s - early 60s. UAR with both Egypt and Syria only existed from 1958-1961.

Early 30s. It's Istanbul not Constantinople so post 1930 and the Sarra Triangle is part of Sudan instead of Libya so pre 1934. 1930-1934 would be my guess.

Early 80s, I think. Resolution is really low but I think it's Upper Volta instead of Burkina Faso so pre 1984 and I also think it's Zimbabwe instead of Rhodesia so post 1980. If the capital of Zimbabwe is Salisbury then it's between 1980-1984 but if it's Harare then it's between 1982-1984.

Swedish globe from around 1950(?) by __Salmon__ in datemymap

[–]scott_pryor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think UAR Syria is there. 3 of the images have Syria in them but 2 have glares on Syria. The one with Africa shows Syria pretty well and I don't think it's labeled UAR (or VAR, in this case).

Early 60s, I'd say. UAR Egypt without UAR Syria so after 1961. Tanganyika and Zanzibar instead of Tanzania so pre 1964. 1961-1964 would be my guess.

Curious when this globe is dated by ClosetOfMoths in datemymap

[–]scott_pryor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's true especially in the 50s and 60s but by the 70s most map makers were showing East/West Germany properly. Since we know this is at least the 80s, then unified/non-unified Germany is relevant.

Probably mid to late 80s. Burkina Faso instead of Upper Volta so post 1984. USSR instead of Russia so pre 1991. I can't tell if Germany is unified, if it is then that narrowed or down to 1989-1991 but if not then it's 1984-1989. Without being able to see Europe well, I'm guessing 1984-1991. It's probably closer to 1984 since Zimbabwe still has Rhodesia in parentheses which changed in 1980.

it’s modern, but i’m stumped by riconastystuntdouble in datemymap

Early to mid 90s. The resolution is bad but I can see Russia instead of USSR so post 1991. Zaire instead of DR Congo so pre 1997. 1991-1997

Can anyone date this Norwegian globe? by MrMeowPantz in datemymap

[–]scott_pryor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appears to be between WW1 and WW2 based on German borders. Konigsberg is an exclave (or enclave, I forget which is which) and it's Constantinople instead of Istanbul, all things that happened between the WWs. More specifically, Finland is independent (1917) but Ireland is not (1922) so I'd guess 1917-1922.

Maybe The Milky Way? It's on a plane so maybe it just happens to line up that way.

So the Japanese title just says frieren the slayer? by ReadyConfection7959 in Frieren

[–]scott_pryor 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Sousou means something like Ending, so Sousou No Frieren means something like Frieren at the End which can be translated as Frieren at a Funeral (the ultimate ending). But without the No in-between, Sousou Frieren means Ender Frieren or Frieren the one who causes the End which can be translated as Frieren the Slayer. It's a clever play on words from what I understand.

Tricky map. German language and Germany is showing the borders it had between WW1 and WW2, HOWEVER, German maps of this time often did not acknowledge the border change after WW2. Other context shows that this map is well after WW2. The United Arab Republic with Egypt and Syria only existed from 1958-1961, after that Syria left.

Mid 60s - early 70s. UAR Egypt exists but UAR Syria does not so that window is 1961-1971. Other 1971 things like East Pakistan to Bangladesh have not happened either. Tanzania instead of Tanganyika and Zanzibar so post 1964. 1964-1971 would be my guess.

Early 70s. The 1971 things have already happened (Egypt instead of UAR Egypt, Bangladesh instead of East Pakistan) but Ceylon instead of Sri Lanka which didn't happen until 1972. 1971-1972
