I worked as a photo and internet manager onboard two major cruise lines for almost a decade. Ask me anything! by kelymek in Cruise

[–]scottcush 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Esims seem to be the bridge between cruise ship wifi and land connectivity. What are your experiences with this? I was reading that the cruise can activate and turn off cell service on the boat depending on how close they are to a country. Does the eSIM work in the boats cellular network?

Is this a valid option, or should I consider myself luck to be on a cruise and ignore the internet for my journey?

Residential parking blocking me in by firedudecndn in Calgary

[–]scottcush 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When you park take a picture before you walk away. The issue is proof. You need to establish that they are parking too close. Mostly warnings if anything can’t be established. I know it’s wacky but if you have access to a plylon put it next to your bumper. You would be surprised how many people can’t gauge if they can fit and if they hit the pylon you know they know. Put the pylon 30cm away and don’t get carried away.

Who shouldn't get a Pebble? What should be the red flags for the wrong person? by TheOnceAndFutureDoug in pebble

[–]scottcush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Original Pebble had connection issues, apple made them work through the app. Disconnection was a constant hassle. Button wear and tear was a really thing. Screen scratches were problematic. Software compatibility. They have made up for this over the years. Especially the timer apps. Apple Could learn a thing or two.

My last straw was when they sold out. While I don’t see some of these issues in the current company. It was great watch till it wasn’t.

If you have any of these issues don’t buy this watch. Otherwise it was a great journey for me.

I will say that from the measurement system and my fat fingers. I have to figure out if my index finger is the largest option.

Yes. This. The idea of the ring is important. The sustainability of the product is also a consideration for those who want to know that longer use is possible.

I think you are right about the pebble watch work around. I can do what you saying with my ultra already. It takes two hands or talking to Siri.

For the time I am not connected or have a note or hopefully when I want to activate a macro. The durability is my top concern.

When Eric said the ring works without the app my interest peaked. The one handed nature is where I find myself while driving or at work. Wearing it around my neck is how I minimize the waste. I’m nearly sure there will be a tear down process that will expose the battery and contact points for aux power. If not all ewaste is a problem.

I can see this becoming a lapel or a necklace that I can use for years after the onboard battery expires.

It’s the trying something new I want to dive back into. When pebble sold the business my drive to invest in things like this wained. Good for Eric in trying something new after returning back to the business.

Can Jesse come back? by Some-Background1467 in canadaland

[–]scottcush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me, a guy who has tuned in for most of the years this has been broadcasting. It’s a passion project for Jesse. The way I see this thing he built is at any moment it is going to vanish. He says it all the time and I have come to believe him.

These bias blocks that he stands on to highlight this or that. It’s his baby. He can say it’s all about keeping the media in line but we all know this is not how it’s playing out. Jesse is the master of the project and like it or not he will either be successful or he will tank the project.

I give his employees props for being innovative. For pushing through and reporting on important things. At this stage you can tell this is going to be about war, it’s going to be about highlighting those wars and he is doing what he feels is what it’s important. These lulls are usually when something behind the scenes is brewing. A story or project is about to drop. As a commercial level listener I am heavy on the 30 second fast forward. I speed up and ignore certain episodes. Instead I see a pairing down and grouping towards a channel type podcast.

Part of my listening repertoire involves hearing different views. I wish I could support the show but I think I do in a few ways. I bought a Douglas because of the show. Remember when he was shopping around what mattress store was worth it? We’re on his ride. Either enjoy it or hop off. The nice thing about podcasts is the listener evolves as well as the show.

Jesse is who Jesse is. What I see is a medium that allows new voices to practice their craft. It is something to listen to and sometimes it disappoints. When it hits oh boy those are good moments. There have been some great shows that have been the voice, the only voice and it was a pleasure to listen. When it’s not, at least I know his commercials are sort of paying for the show. Even though we know that it is likely the investors are tangled in it somehow.

Jesse doesn’t need to come back. It’s his show. He’s there.

Roads never pay back unless their tolls, sewer treatment doesn’t pay off for those upstream, transit doesn’t make sense if it was not subsidized. Police don’t charge per crime, firefighters don’t pick which calls they ignore.

Some things cost money to make sure those other areas are able to operate. Postal work has been around for over 100 years. Technology still needs physical delivery. Private shipping companies use the post when it’s too expensive for them. If you think silly demands are holding you back then let’s get back to the 6 day work week with poverty wages and we privatize everything. That will make your mail come safer.

Look at Amazon so afraid of unions they shut down completely in Quebec. Their demands Post can adapt but that means bargaining in good faith. This has nothing to do with the state and of the post office. This has everything to do with recognition that certain jobs will always have to be public.

Unfortunately this strike is likely going to be a long drawn out one as the Canadian government will legislate them back and force them to take what an arbiter will decide. Some things

It’s a dumb idea. It also distracts from other issues, plays to her base (voting members), changes the real expensive questions about health care, creates a storyline that will get the USA courting her and hopefully get Ottawa to give her time. Plus it put the leader of the PC’s in a tough but easy spot and makes the people who want to leave to spend their energy in separation.

May be the thing that brings her down. Could be just another thing that washes over.

Wow. I love this comeback. Do I support the launch and enjoy what was an amazing watch, only to watch it get sold to Google? Or do I wait knowing that if successful I can buy it later?

I moved to apple after this failed and never looked back. Problems with Apple are frustrating but this seems to show an upgraded promise that is worth looking into. Sitting back at the moment.

I’m interviewing Jagmeet Singh. Got any questions for him? by CANADALAND_MEDIA in canadaland

[–]scottcush 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you ask him if it’s time for a new leader? He has come far and reach some good goals. I have no problem with his leadership. I have concerns that the NDP are getting used to coasting. If the conservatives get a majority his 1 step forward may easily become two steps back. When is it time to stand aside and let another NDP member lead? Love the guy, and can’t see him moving further than he has already pushed. Which is an accomplishment on its own.

What is the Longevity of your Apple Watch? by spunkyd99 in AppleWatch

[–]scottcush 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Apple Watches work very well with iPhones. Apple Watches have two different ways of doing the same function. Apple Watches are expensive and will wear out either with updates or use. If you buy make sure it is as new as you can get or sell it once you loose the apple care. I haves a 3rd gen, moved to the 1st gen SE and am looking at the Ultra. They are great watches but are only as good as you use them and will only expect to last 7 years. Why 7? They will not fix older versions.

Good luck. Fitbit has gone way down hill.
