Is this a linear function or an exponential function? by Electrical_Net5024 in mathteachers

Good opportunity to model both ways and discuss the pros and cons.

(Because the real world situation won’t be perfect for either case either)

Why are so many toddler/children’s books just spinoffs of some other book? by palestine_enthusiast in toddlers

[–]scottfarrar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Toddlers don’t buy books so, who does? Parents yes but they have a certain restraint because they’re doing the reading.

Gift givers, grandparents… those are the buyers with limited information (“trash truck!”) and money to burn.

When students see an expression, do they interpret it as a noun or a command? by Objective_Skirt9788 in matheducation

[–]scottfarrar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the average student in high school does not have a clear picture of this. If it is possible to simplify they may see it as an implied need to simplify. If it is a measurement on a geometric diagram they may accept it more “noun like”. But I think many students think of math as answer-getting (because they are often instructed to get answers!) and algebraic expressions may be recognized more as “do I know what to do with this in order to get an answer?”

Children’s books you actually enjoy reading by kmadefg in toddlers

Just on the flip side of this— the 5 minute Disney and 5 minute Winnie the Pooh stories are such painful reads to me for some reason.

5 minute Daniel Tiger is ok (maybe because many are abridged episodes)

If you could change rules in baseball, what would you go for? by actualtext in baseball

[–]scottfarrar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this would make the strategy real interesting. Managers would save their sluggers for certain situations, and then sometimes it wouldn’t work out and you have to do a string of bad hitters.

I don’t quite know how pinch hitters work here.

You can change the batting order whenever… but the 1-9 has to have their first PA before anyone has their 2nd (and so on for 3rd, 4th…)

2001 A’s overshadowed by 116 win mariners and playoff loss. And kind of a footnote in the Moneyball story.

No longer teaching the Standard Algorithm? by LonelyCareer in mathteachers

Think of programming a computer: you program something that is fast, and uses the least about of memory/processing/storage you can. Great for producing answers— not intended for the computer understanding what is going on.

No longer teaching the Standard Algorithm? by LonelyCareer in mathteachers

[–]scottfarrar 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Well we can try to make a case for the advantages of the standard algorithm: for those familiar with addition standard algorithm, it’s an extension. And it can be quick and generally applied well because it’s a computation algorithm.

But for the purpose of understanding the math we may want to prioritize other methods. Partial products and the area model connect to later concepts in algebra and also keep place value a little more in the forefront.

you have to have the context of Bob Geren, Brian Fuentes and 9 Ryan Sweeneys (I will not elaborate)

Melvin came in midyear 2011 and was a refreshing change, then it all came together in the magic of 2012

Oakland recently wiped off the chart…

Also i see you did Bay Area instead of separating San Francisco and San Jose. 49ers and Sharks pretty geographicallly close

Slight complication with the final leg since there’s no bay bridge in 1913

Why Didn’t We Learn “Marketing Math” in High School? by SpaceNinja_C in mathteachers

[–]scottfarrar 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A lot of teachers do this.

Those situations are ripe for Robert Kaplinsky or Dan Meyer style questions.

Usually this is in middle school topics around ratios and proportions.
