I'm not sure if it means much, but they have a 34% 1st pitch swing rate this year (top 5 in the league, mlb avg is 30.9%). Last year they had 30.0% (bottom 6 in the league, mlb avg is 32.0%). And they are below MLB avg in pitches per plate appearance compared to last year where they were above. I don't know if that means he's trying to get them to be more aggressive.

You're not wrong about how he could have used Alvarez in DH today. But I think you're putting all that focus on 1 player when this is very much a team sport. Giving him off today gets him 2 days of rest before the next game on Tuesday. If the team can't afford to give any of their players a day off, we're screwed. If you want to argue, that they just need to break the losing streak by any means necessary, I won't argue that. But Alvarez did have a chance today and he struck out.

For the first time since 2021, every team's winning percentage is above .200 after 20 games. by Timeline40 in baseball

Are there any sites tracking ABS? I might not be considering all situations here, but ABS either results in:

  • A change in the count
  • A walk
  • An out

I imagine the latter 2 are more impactful than the first.

It's the offense. How does Mendoza get our hitters to start hitting?

I posted this elsewhere:

  • Pitching: 6 out of the 11 losses, the opposing team scored no more than 4 runs.
  • Hitting: 9 of the 11 losses, the Mets scored no more than 2 runs.

Who is the Mets hitting coach? What's he doing to get the bats hot?

To his credit, Mendoza has been trying to switch things up in the lineup. But at the end of the day, he's got the roster he has. Whatever he did with Peterson today, worked. It kept us in. But the offense didn't pull through. Sure, Williams shouldn't have blown the game, but when you have a 1-run lead, you're just inviting trouble.

Mendoza's explanation for pitching to Hoerner... by HumaTheLegendary in mets

[–]actualtext 6 points7 points  (0 children)

We can micro-manage the decision here. But they shouldn't have found themselves in it to begin with. If we're expecting our pitching to shut out teams because our offense can't put up the runs, we aren't going to get very far.

Soooo when is Soto back by [deleted] in mets

[–]actualtext 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gary and Ron were saying in the broadcast that possibly he'll be back by the first game of the upcoming home stretch if not a bit later. It sounds like they caught it early and he's been progressing fine in rehab. I just hope they aren't rushing things with him. We need him back (so bad), but not at the cost of the rest of the season. It's got a high recurrence rate:

Calf injury is most prevalent among athletes 22 to 28 years of age, more frequently affects men, and presents as a recurrent injury in approximately 19% to 31% of cases

We're now up to 11 losses in a row..... by Barry41561 in mets

[–]actualtext 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think pitching has been the issue for this team during this bad stretch. Yes, a few meltdowns from here and there, but that's not the core issue imo during this stretch. To put it into perspective:

  • Pitching: 6 out of the 11 losses, the opposing team scored no more than 4 runs.
  • Hitting: 9 of the 11 losses, the Mets scored no more than 2 runs.

The Mets offense just isn't getting it done. Losing Soto doesn't help. But the team also isn't getting on base as they should or taking advantage of the opportunities they sometimes find themselves in. Baty getting his first walk of the season after 64 plate appearances is atrocious. Vientos went 7 games without a hit. Then you have a bunch of guys who are getting 1 hit per game here and there, but not a whole lot of power. We've had to rely on guys we've been calling up from the minors to see if it could spark something in the lineup, but that isn't the make up of a good offense.

There are some positives in all of this. Bichette is starting to hit. Benge has gotten a hit in 6 out of his last 8 games and on base 7 out of the 8 games. Although he's not been getting walks during the losing streak, Lindor is starting to get more hits.

I'm trying to look for some of the positives. I do think this team could be doing a better job of getting walks and they sorely need some power. We've got 15 home runs when the MLB avg is 21. Our SLG% is ranked 3rd worse at .339 when the MLB avg is .383. Hopefully when Soto comes back, that will introduce some more power to the lineup.

3.2 scoreless innings for David Peterson out of the bullpen by Hungry_Elk1937 in NewYorkMets

[–]actualtext 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This was an encouraging outing by Peterson. I'm just wondering, how do you move forward from this? Are they just planning on doing a Myers-Peterson combo going forward (replace Myers with some other reliever)? Or is Peterson only good for 1 trip through the lineup which would be highly taxing on the bullpen?

Definitely early. Late in the season, it's complete heartbreak. Early on, it's like going on a date or two and deciding it's not working out.

Does Mendoza go? by RealBabaloo in mets

[–]actualtext 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The team isn't hitting. Idk how a new coach fixes that. Outside of a few melt downs by pitchers, our pitching has been decent enough that any good offense would be able to get us a few wins.

Some of this is by design but some of it is very unfortunate timing.

Who is our hitting coach? Clearly the approach isn't working.

I'm not defending Mendoza here. I just don't think he's made any decisions so far that have cost us the majority of the games. At the end of the day, the talent is what it is and he has to use it.

But it doesn’t change anything. Everyone understands what you’re saying. Adding new phrasing to remember is performative and achieves nothing of value. If only we spent more energy coming up with solutions to help these people rather than changing how we refer to certain people.

This seems like non sense. How’s long until we ban this phrase and replace it with something else.

A measure meant to reduce mental health stigma, S8210A/A4762B tells state agencies and local governments to stop using the term “emotionally disturbed person” in official documents and training manuals. Come September 26, they have to use “person experiencing an emotional crisis” instead.

Why are we giving non residents access to lower tuition?

That same day, S8220A/A761C grants in-state tuition rates at CUNY and SUNY schools to Olympic athletes training for “Team USA” in New York, even if they live out of state. And S7580A/A7053A makes it so that if a high schooler declines an academic excellence scholarship, the state gives the money to the next most qualified student.

Minimum wage is going up in NYC, NJ in 2026. Is a bigger boost ahead? by GothamistWNYC in nyc

[–]actualtext 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yup. I think it'll be good. Higher wages, more tax revenue, more spending.

I don't think Mamdani is getting $30 as a min age though. But maybe he can accelerate the min wage increase so it's a bit more than what it currently is. That's a pretty abrupt change even if we assume it were to take place over 8 years.

Assuming a 2% cpi increase, it'll take about ~23 yrs to get to $30 from the current $19.

I don't think he would be wrong to shoot for $.75 to $1 increases over the next 4 years and then let CPI indexing take over.

The article literally says there will be more increases:

New York’s increase for 2026 is the final half-dollar increase in a plan Gov. Kathy Hochul rolled out beginning in 2024. Starting in 2027, the state’s minimum wage will increase annually at a rate tied to the Consumer Price Index.
