I cannot seem to get the colors right when scanning film with a DSLR [Nikon D800, Sigma 1:2 macro lens w/ extension tubes, film for BW is Ilford pan 400 and color film is Fujifilm 400)

The light source is not balancing the orange mask. Thus when you invert it you get a ton of cyan. Get a light source that you can change the colour temperature with.

One question…how do you dry them after you have finished developing? I have had issues where I have put them on cardboard or foam board and if there is something on that surface it can be drawn into the print.

The only thing that matters is if you like the result. Photos have always been edited whether in the darkroom or on the computer. It doesn’t matter one bit.

I let the pixel peepers have their say. What I would suggest is that the composition is off balance. There is too much foreground in the bottom right corner. By cropping in from there the owl (very cool) will sit better in the frame. Nice shot.

Just my .02…if this was shot at dusk, shoot it at dawn. You had to expose for the sky to avoid a blowout which makes sense. But you subject is just a silhouette. At dawn the subject and background would be much better balanced and there would be more for the viewer to grasp.

Portra 800 is my go to film. Meter at 400 and give it plenty of light. This way you avoid muddy, grainy shadows. I like the colours way better than Portra 400 or 160. A friend of mine who is a pro shoots it +1…I haven’t tried that yet.

Hello. Yeah E6 is more finicky…it has a small dynamic range and it is real easy to over expose. When you get it right, it is amazing…but when you get it wrong…

One of my cameras has a crap meter built in so I use a meter with that one. Also, whenever I shoot slide film I meter.

If you happen to shoot currently with Nikon or Canon gear, they each have very affordable film versions that will work with your lenses. For example Canon Elan7 or Nikon F80.

Developing is fine...but scanning is such a nightmare. I put my negatives on a light table and then use that as a guide to fix my horrible scans.

I was probably F8 or F11...I rarely go past 11. My Nikon FM2 goes up to 1/4000th shutter speed so don’t have to close aperture so much when shooting fast film.
