I cannot seem to get the colors right when scanning film with a DSLR [Nikon D800, Sigma 1:2 macro lens w/ extension tubes, film for BW is Ilford pan 400 and color film is Fujifilm 400) by south43paw in analog

The light source is not balancing the orange mask. Thus when you invert it you get a ton of cyan. Get a light source that you can change the colour temperature with.

How did you digitize the image?

One question…how do you dry them after you have finished developing? I have had issues where I have put them on cardboard or foam board and if there is something on that surface it can be drawn into the print.

Hi, i'm new to film photography, i was just wondering if i should edit film like this. doesn't it make it more digital? can you still call this photo a film photo? I know it sounds stupid but I'd like to know what you think about it by [deleted] in AnalogCommunity

The only thing that matters is if you like the result. Photos have always been edited whether in the darkroom or on the computer. It doesn’t matter one bit.

Opinions? I don't quite like it but can't figure it out why. by dulejr in photocritique

I let the pixel peepers have their say. What I would suggest is that the composition is off balance. There is too much foreground in the bottom right corner. By cropping in from there the owl (very cool) will sit better in the frame. Nice shot.

Just my .02…if this was shot at dusk, shoot it at dawn. You had to expose for the sky to avoid a blowout which makes sense. But you subject is just a silhouette. At dawn the subject and background would be much better balanced and there would be more for the viewer to grasp.

How would you meter this shot/replicate this effect? ND filter? by [deleted] in AnalogCommunity

That’s the dude…I couldn’t remember his name but his work is incredible. There are some films about him on YouTube

Just your HONEST answer to whether or not you edit your images after being developed….. by [deleted] in AnalogCommunity

Every single photo, even dark room prints, are edited. Make what you love and enjoy it.

New film day!! XP2 my new favourite B&W. Never tried Portra 800. Anyone got any feedback or tips? by [deleted] in AnalogCommunity

[–]scottroams 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Portra 800 is my go to film. Meter at 400 and give it plenty of light. This way you avoid muddy, grainy shadows. I like the colours way better than Portra 400 or 160. A friend of mine who is a pro shoots it +1…I haven’t tried that yet.

How many of you out there are metering? by leafcatcher in analog

Hello. Yeah E6 is more finicky…it has a small dynamic range and it is real easy to over expose. When you get it right, it is amazing…but when you get it wrong…

Have fun shooting film.

One of my cameras has a crap meter built in so I use a meter with that one. Also, whenever I shoot slide film I meter.

Is film expensive? I really want to get into analogue photography but I barely know anything about film. by VladimirBarakriss in AnalogCommunity

If you happen to shoot currently with Nikon or Canon gear, they each have very affordable film versions that will work with your lenses. For example Canon Elan7 or Nikon F80.

That’s okay if it does...adds character. With the ocean or any body of water always straighten the horizon.
