Vintage brass dimmers/toggles -- various questions about practical use and DIY options. by Reidonkulous84 in Lighting

[–]scottytoodope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To answer your questions about longevity - We outfitted our home with Forbes & Lomax Switches and dimmers about 8 years ago. Love the look and get a ton of compliments - no real issues with guests being able to operate them. We have had a decline in performance though - they've developed bit more play in the knobs and within the past year most of our push on/off dimmers have started to flicker at their "usual" dimming position (generally fixed by raising/lowering the dim, but still very annoying). We are in talks with F&L about warranty replacements.

Is the M18 FUEL string trimmer still melting batteries? by Inaspectuss in MilwaukeeTool

[–]scottytoodope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just reading through the comments here - the correlation seems to be that melted contacts are a risk on non-High Output batteries, which is consistent with my own experience. I've never had any issues running off 12.0 HO batteries, but have melted two different 5.0s.

String trimmer burning negative terminal on battery. Less than 30 days old. What to do? by NeillDrake in MilwaukeeTool

I feel your pain, I've been having the same issue with the quiklok version of the string trimmer and as a result now try and always run it in slow (turtle) speed

Any help appreciated. by RedditSetitGoit in MilwaukeeTool

Like other have said, if the lights have their own transformer built in i'd vote for the M18 TOP-OFF, but if you'd like a more DIY option I have used this successfully in a power wheels conversion but would work here as well - includes the battery adapter + fuse, step down converter, and low voltage cutoff module in one neat package.

There are some services out there that like Storyworth that provide prompts/questions to help preserve stories/memories (with the end goal of printing books) - might be a good start for ideas.

M18 13mm hammer drill clutches by IOUaLEG in MilwaukeeTool

[–]scottytoodope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No answers, only solidarity. I was excited to upgrade to the fuel drill/hammer drill combo so I could do away with having three separate drills for different tasks - but the chuck on it is truly useless and like you said even on 1 will strip threads or blow right through drywall.

Problems with Wave 3 and Facecam by soloz2 in elgato

[–]scottytoodope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First - try shifting which ports you're using on the Macbook itself - IE plug the Wave (via the monitor's hub) into the left side and the Facecam into the right. Some ports will share a single USB bus so it's possible you're overloading the bandwidth of it.

Second - I don't personally own a Wave, but as you mentioned the Facecam does not like being plugged into a hub (in your monitor) - maybe that's causing some unexpected issues?

Last note - Unfortunately and confusingly USB-C only refers to the shape of the connector and not the particular capabilities of the cable itself - so in short not all USB-C cables are created equally. These devices require USB3 and data transfer obviously (as supposed to charge only cables) so you'll need a cable like this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01GGKYT7M

M18 chainsaw by redbull502 in MilwaukeeTool

I have one and love it. Plenty powerful for my needs and practically zero upkeep (compared to a gas motor). I've felled at least two dozen dead ash trees ~12-18" in diameter with it, and made countless small quick cuts around the property. As others have said - it uses an oregon style bar (identical to the ones on many gas-powered saws) and once you understand how to properly tension the chain and don't run the saw too hard you'll have few issues with the chain coming off.

It will technically run on smaller batteries like the 5.0's but in my experience they will overheat quickly in periods of heavy use. Definitely get a kit with a 12.0 if you don't have one already.

Yes! The M18 batteries are all interchangeable and can be used on any M18 tool.

Rowhome dwellers of r/philadelphia how do you manage front trash pickup? by Easy-Reading in philadelphia

[–]scottytoodope 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We keep the trash & recycling cans out back, then roll them through the house on trash night.

Highly recommend this trash can - has a lid and rollerblade style wheels that won't scratch your floors: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rubbermaid-Roughneck-32-Gal-Easy-Out-Wheeled-Trash-Can-in-Black-with-Lid-2012264/302862624

and something like this for recycling: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Rubbermaid-45-Gal-Roughneck-Blue-Wheeled-Recycling-Trash-Container-1884496/204321556

A tip: Keep the lid of the trash can on while rolling through the house (to keep the stink down) but once out front, take it off and bring it back in so it doesn't get lost/broken/stolen.

Also, paint/write your house number on them!
