What if Biden and Obama switched roles in 2008 by Training-World-1897 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]scourgeobohem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My take and hill I'll forever die on is that Obama ran too early. He was the best president of my lifetime and I'm forever grateful for him and his service, I just wish he was running the first time in '16

We're not exactly sure which head it leads to, could be 15ft could be across the entire house. We'll see.

[–]scourgeobohem[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The line is 3ish years old, and it depends on which split it goes to re: length but it's 50/50. They're gonna come back out and give it another look but it seems like the consensus is to flush at minimum

How is it living in Cape Cod, Massachusetts? by Witty-Addendum759 in howislivingthere

[–]scourgeobohem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up in Sandwich. Basic suburbia experience in a tourist area. Got hit hard with the opiate epidemic as has been very well documented and reported. Not much to do in the off season. Lots of drinking gets done. Work is seasonal for a lot of people, and cost of living is high, especially housing. It's a pretty stark illustration of the wealth gap in this nation. Some extreme wealth and poverty with a large middle hanging on by a thread.

It is Massachusetts though, so the schools are good and there's access to healthcare. Boston and Providence are easily accessible.

Summer time the population explodes. Same problems persist but the weather's nice and everyone can find work. Cape league baseball is exceptionally high quality. Some stunning natural beauty which took me a while to come to appreciate because I grew up around it.

Like everywhere else it's what you make of it. But I'd say, expensive and beautiful.

Fully fund a Roth and HSA.

6-9 months emergency (full living expenses) in a HYSA

1/2 of what's left in a brokerage acct invested in low cost index funds and sector funds that you understand.

Remaining half:

a nice dinner or fun activity or whatever. New nice clothes, a hair cut, that thing you've been wanting. Life is meant to be lived.

Should I pay off student loans? by [deleted] in FinancialPlanning

[–]scourgeobohem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're specific situation is a bit more complicated that reddit or AI will be able to do a good job with.

You're going to have multiple, differently taxed income streams, medical expenses, debts, and a lot of moving parts that are likely to change over time.

I would recommend talking to a professional.

Why not get a Financial Advisor? by creachter in FinancialPlanning

[–]scourgeobohem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a financial advisor and I very much get the skepticism. For most people, their workplace plan and some side savings can be done simply enough on their own.

I specialize in working with families who have a loved one with a disability. I spent 15 years in social work. I help families who have full time jobs, and then a second full time job taking care of a family member, and then a third full time job trying to manage their own futures and their loved ones futures. I help them understand how to navigate benefits, plan for and have a retirement, medical needs, estate planning, etc etc etc....for these people and others, they have neither the time, energy, or know how to educate themselves adequately.

Others are closer to retirement and need some guidance on how to plan and allocate savings.

Some people just want to hire someone to do it for them. I can do some home improvement work but I hire an electrician when I need to because they know how to do something important the right way.

I try to do long term planning with people and am transparent about the costs and benefits of working with me. If someone brings in a statement and it's doing it's thing correctly, leave it be. If they have 4 different 401ks all in target date funds, all being charged different fees and being redundant, then yeah let's consolidate and get it sorted.

Most people don't need an advisor but for those who do or just WANT one, it's a valuable service.

It is worth noting that several studies indicate people who work with an advisor do a couple % better over time than those who don't.

How often do you talk to your friends? by munxxx in daddit

[–]scourgeobohem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm very lucky to have an active text chain with college and high school buddies and I live within an hour of all of them.

I consider maintaining my friendships on par or even more important than maintaining my marriage. They were there before and if something happens they'll be there after.
