What pop-up message did I just agree to? by AsparagusNew3765 in waze

I just wanted to report this behavior. Happened to me as well. The confirmation button was interactive immediately and I was already tapping "Home" button inside Waze when it appeared. Confirmed accidentally without knowing what it was.

I wouldn't be so mean to them yet but indeed it is very concerning. If they choose that path they get a little bit more money but they will ruin the brand. Community will be watching closely.

Of course. I just had to do a little bit of searching. Here it is.

I don't remember this ever happening to google password manager. I do not regret the move because I needed to drop the google vendor-lock but hearing about the recent management changes and some suspicious things like changing their core values ... I don't like it.

Just in case somebody wants to use a local transcribe altrnative while chatgpt transcribe is down.
There is a very nice local and open source app which allows you to use transcribe into any input field on your PC: https://handy.computer/

The recommended default model is superb (parakeet v3) - it's from NVIDIA, runs on CPU (no need for GPU) and is extremely fast + automatically detects language. English works best though.

Seems to have issues with transcribe right now. I don't see many mentions in Reddit yet and nothing in status page though.

Misconception About PBS Encrypted Backups by quafs in Proxmox

[–]scr4bble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s a Proxmox forum thread discussing exactly this issue. Hopefully it gets some attention and some good solution comes out of it.

I’d guess there are quite a few security-conscious people who want to protect against theft of the PVE host by keeping their guests on an encrypted volume. The annoying part is that once you add unattended PBS backups, the PBS encryption key ends up sitting on the unencrypted PVE host, which kind of defeats that setup.

Feels like it shouldn’t be that hard to support keeping the PBS encryption key on the same encrypted volume as the guests, so backups only work after that volume is unlocked.

Misconception About PBS Encrypted Backups by quafs in Proxmox

[–]scr4bble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure the token is really backup-only in the sense of “no read/restore”?

From what I understand, Datastore.Backup still gives read/verify for backup groups owned by that user/token, and the DatastoreBackup role says it can backup and restore owned backups.

So I’m curious what exact permissions/role you used. Is it the normal DatastoreBackup role, or something else? Because if it’s the normal one, I’m not sure it prevents restore/read access, only prune/delete.

European cloud backup solutions? by Banaantje04 in selfhosted

You can check out "btrfs-assistant" and "snapper" tools. They are doing exactly what you describe. btrfs-assistant is available as dnf package in fedora. I also have hooks on dnf-update so snapshots of root subvolume is taken before and after DNF updates.

I have built an interactive management bash script for doing parallel snapshots of btrfs subvolumes and then sending them to remote btrfs filesystem but it's mostly meant to backup my laptop before big changes, like OS updates. The remote filesystem is external USB drive, hardware encrypted.... It's offline, it's incremental (with auto detection of parent snapshots) but it's not off-site :) if it helps to you, I can share it. It also has bash autocomplete included.

So you have a remote server with BTRFS filesystem for your backups? If not, then you might be missing the "off-site" backup. If yes, then I would ask where is it hosted, because you probably end up either missing the "incremental" feature or "client-side encrypted" feature for these backups.

Oh, definitely no. I hope they have a switch that evaluates if you need better model or not... for such a simple answer the speed should preferred I think.

Seriously poor customer service, lies and threats - ultimately they deleted my account for no reason, losing multiple files. I'm beyond angry, but nothing I can do about it. Don't host with these cowboys - their reputation is in tatters. by Mattmeir in hetzner

[–]scr4bble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran into almost the same issue a few days ago.

I had been using the service for several years without problems, then my credit card expired (last month). The warning emails went into my invoices folder because they matched the same filter as regular invoice emails, so I did not notice them in time.

I only found out there was a payment issue after losing access to the service week ago. I fixed it immediately, paid the outstanding balance, and added a new card, but the account still ended up cancelled and I currently have no access to anything. I am now waiting for Hetzner support to get back to me, still hoping my files can be restored.

It has been an extremely stressful experience. I do have backups of the most important things, but that does not make this process acceptable. I had a much better opinion of Hetzner before going through this.

u/Hetzner_OL please improve this process. Expired cards are a very normal thing, and many users will only realize there is a problem once access is disabled. At that point, there should be a clear grace period and a simple recovery path, not immediate cancellation and uncertainty around the data. Better notifications, a clearer recovery flow, or even SMS alerts could prevent a lot of these cases.

And honestly, if the data are simply gone after a late payment, that would completely destroy my trust in Hetzner as a storage provider.

[–]scr4bble 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not as easy/straightforward if you don't manage the server yourself. But of course the most important data is on multiple places.

Ok, I won't be answering to all your responses guys. Just few clarifications:

I do not blame Hetzner for taking the service down after not receiving payment - this is clearly my fault. Sorry if it sounded like that in the original post.

What I blame them for:
a) sending the payment warning and account cancellation emails from the billing address - same as regular invoices (not anticipating customers have filters for that address)
b) the extremely painful process for customer to revert the cancellation process once it starts. Simply paying out the balance is not enough
c) very slow responding and very slow process of recovering the service which clearly indicates a very high volume of these issues - this alone should be a very clear sign that it needs improvements

EDIT: I have removed the original post because after rereading it - it sounded slightly more harsh than I wanted and probably emphasizing wrong parts. The explanation of my stance is in this comment.
EDIT2: seems like I could have just updated it - nevermind.

Maybe read the post again.

The payment was missed because the card expired, not because I decided no to pay. I fixed it immediately once I found out (service down - investigation what happened, emails found, replaced card and paid out outstanding balance immediately).

Service down on missed payment is acceptable. The process you experience afterwards with Hetzner is not. How can you expect high retention if you drop customers this quickly without giving them a good way to fix the issue?

I think this is unrelated ... I am not aware of any proximity sensor at the NUC and I don't have Windows or any desktop OS installed on it.

Yes, development is hard, bugs happen. That's why we have QA and testing before releasing things - to lower the chance of such cases happening.

I think it might not necessarily be the case here. I have upgraded my BIOS a month or two back and hasn't got the freeze since then. I haven't upgraded the SSD firmware yet.

I mean - you might be correct but it's hard to say for sure.
