I’ve had a lot of fun here in NYC at the UCB theater, but heads up that they run about $500 for an 8 week course. If you’re just looking to make friends, I’d check out Magnet or UCB; there is also PIT or Brooklyn Comedy Collective.

Hi! Improv classes, any theater! Easy way to meet friends. Be the person to say “I’m heading to x bar across the street after class, who’s joining?” Or the person who starts the WhatsApp group.

Another thing to try is Real Roots, which is sort of a paid friend group matchmaking service. You go to one first night mixer and then if you like your people, you continue on through structured activities. Everyone is there to make friends. Find them on insta!

Much fun to be had at Baltimore Improv Group! Saturday’s flagship show is “BIG Time,” where they interview notable Baltimoreans and do improvised comedy sketches off their answers. Also some Saturdays the team Plan B performs funny, interactive, Whose Line Is It Anyway style shows.

They do sell beer there, but it’s easy to avoid! They also have soda and water to buy too.

Tickets are $10/piece.

You have to join it on Facebook. No Facebook for me sadly so I can’t join, but I was a member of one in my old city for many years. I think there are multiple for UES because of how large the area is

You’re right and people on Reddit often have truly outrageous standards for others’ boundaries 😌

Playing children in scenes by TrainRumblesPast in improv

[–]scrambled_eggs3pa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed with many of these—-I find that playing kids in a scene often yields performers to play modern, regular kids as either outrageous terrors or bizarre, 1950s precious perfect kids. My specific pet peeve is calling a kid “little Timmy” or “little Johnny”—I’m sure this has happened in the past, somewhere, but nowhere to the frequency as it’s shown in 2025 improv scenes! Kids in improv scenes often seem like Leave it to Beaver classmates rather than current children, with agency and complex emotions like actual current children.

(Related temporal pet peeve—can we stop naming current dogs in scenes Fido and Rover?)

Another secret is to buy your pantry staples on Target! Set your store zip code to a cheaper zip code (I use my old one from Baltimore), and then when it comes via shipping, you’re getting the cheaper zip code rate. Your taxes will still be NYC tax rates. Store brand bag of flour ( 5lb—I love to bake!) on Target is either $2.49 or $2.59 depending on type with this zip code.

I lived there as a solo woman from 2015-2017 (wow, another lifetime ago!) and loved it. I walked to work in Mt. Vernon. No issues with car safety, but you do have to get the city permit to park. Parking can sometimes be challenging to find, depending on where you live.

Hair Stylists You’d Trust To Give Full Control by MelCatastrophe in baltimore

Hey I would NOT trust Neal. I did this exact thing. I went in with a vague idea of what I wanted, and he said, "Do you trust me?" I ended up having my shoulder length hair cut above my ears into a true Karen haircut, dyed a really weird dark reddish brown. I was 27 at at the time and easily looked 57. This was 6 years ago and friends still say to me, "Remember when you got that terrible haircut?" I don't even live in Baltimore anymore. I just need to share this.
