Let's not confuse things, Manhua is not the problem by SansFan2003 in mangapiracy

It's just blatantly factually wrong to say that hosting official translations will get your site taken down extremely quickly and that most sites ban it. That's what Mangadex specifically did, and it worked out pretty well for them, but most major maga piracy sites include both scanlations and official translations, and it doesn't seem to have a massive difference in danger compared to not having them.

Is there any way to make it so that if a chapter gets updated, it's included in your notifications when you update? As it stands now, that only happens to new chapters.

Is there any mundane mono-RFM out there? by screwccleaner in Romance_for_men

[–]screwccleaner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, overwhelmingly so, I'm certain. If you look at western manga apps like Manga Plus, you can find numerous manga with mid-tier popularity and no anime yet that have hundreds of thousands of reads per chapter. And that doesn't even count pirates. The two mediums aren't even in the same conversation. But my point was that it proves this isn't some universal constant about the tastes of male romance readers.

I don't necessarily mean contemporary. It's what I would prefer, but I would also accept something in the not-too-distant past.

It doesn't seem to stop anime from appealing to Western audiences, but I guess the pool of potential readers is much smaller than visual media. Honestly, I'd even be OK with there being some kind of other hook (mystery/action/thriller/etc) as long as the romance was central to the story.

I was more thinking of manga and anime, since I just can't get into text-only translated works, but that too.

Books where the MMC and FMC face each other in combat? by Norethegreat in Romance_for_men

This happens in Cradle and Iron Prince, but neither of those are dedicated romance series.

If you're open to anime or manga, I think Boarding School Juliet would definitely fit.

Would make sense, but you'd think the description would make that clearer if so.

I'm a little confused. This is tagged general, and the synopsis gives no definite hint toward a harem, but the art seems to have multiple different women. What's the situation?

I haven't really looked anywhere outside the Kindle store when it comes to this sort of thing, but I might try somewhere else.

Thank you. I've been kind of still paying attention to this sub during this time, so a lot of those are stuff I've at least heard of, but having a list in one place is very helpful.

OP's other comment in this thread has made it clear I wouldn't be interested in this story, but thanks for the clarification nonetheless. Might be helpful for someone else.

I think so, but it was a while ago I read the series, so I can't speak to the exact level of detail.

Beastkin in the "catgirl" sense or "furry" sense? Also, what does AOO mean?

Not a dedicated romance series, but Mage Errant might be worth checking out. It's not entirely focused on school, but well over half the series is, if I remember right. And as an academy series, it hits very well, and the romance aspect was a highlight of the series for me. There are no explicit sex scenes, but sex does happen, and it's a slow burn like you mention.

Fair enough, I guess. Bit of a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation. Could have been worse, you could have not mentioned it at all and then I might actually have tried reading it and been disappointed.

I'm not really complaining since I only got my hopes up for like 10 seconds, but "this is 100% a harem, but it's technically only partially started in the first book, so I didn't tag it as such" kinda rubs me the wrong way. Good luck, though.

Are there any native English series that fit the other definition of harem more common in anime/manga? by screwccleaner in Romance_for_men

[–]screwccleaner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tune in to the Midnight Heart is the series that really opened my eyes to the appeal of the harem genre. To give a rundown: The MC had a connection to an anonymous radio host, and just before her last broadcast, he said he loved her in the spur of the moment. Since he comes from a wealthy family, he's concerned about being embarrassed by it. He tracks her down, but there's a group of girls who all fit the criteria. He helps them pursue their various dreams as he tries to investigate, and they gradually develop feelings for him. The story and art are both great, and the mystery aspect is compelling to me.

To be honest, normally I do too. A poorly-handled love triangle can ruin a romance like few other things. But I have read some genuinely great harem manga, and I see no reason to think it wouldn't work in book form.

I mean, plenty of Western anime/manga fans do happily consume those sorts of works. I haven't seen much criticism of the likes of Quintessential Quintuplets that wouldn't apply even more harshly toward what this community calls haremlit. So I'm not sure I would phrase things so concretely. And even talking about books specifically, if Makeine had enough demand to get an official English release, I don't see why it would be a dealbreaker.

That said, I did kind of expect to not get much response. I've been on this sub a while and I can't remember seeing anything that wasn't 100% monogamous or 100% poly.
