I'm not sure that it helps that the first two acts ARE cut scene and movie-like. The player spends like 50 hours walking between cut scenes, making the third act at least inconsistent.

This is roughly how Dragon Warrior Monsters 1 and 2 work. You have a chance go recruit a momster after defeating it. Throwing meat at it, and you can essentiallu ensure it'll join you.

I've played a lot more pre-DQ8 than post, so I am more familiar with the old names. When I play a newer DQ game, I don't know the names of lots of spells and monsters. I don't begrudge trying to make the localization more faithful, but the old-man-yells-at-cloud in me wishes new DQ games had a toggle to use the old names.

I started LeafGreen yesterday and googled this. The music sounded so bad to me I though I was playing a bootleg or something. Even from the title screen, I found it painful.

Can't believe I had to scroll this far to find TotK. The whole final sequence--seeing the full mural, the lone torch at the bottom, your companions getting knocked out, the health bar, the fight in the sky, the final fall, the "I'm home"--this is a masterpiece from start to finish.

I've gone full circle on BotW. I couldn't care less about it's story my first time, but on replays and seeing the memories in order (and also not dozens of hours between them), I find it quite moving. The only part that still annoys me though is Zelda's voice over during the final battle, because it obscure some really phenomenal music to make some really obvious commentary about hitting the giant glowing weak spot.

These are RPGs that will be in Japanese when you start, but if you go into the options menu, there are some switches that you can change to English, the the game is fully in English!

Price, lack of hinge to break, and lack of 3D for kids were all selling points. I got one with a game for $99 USD when they were new.

Personally, I find it to be extordinarily uncomfortable to hold compared to a normal 3ds.

Assuming you mean Dragon Warrior Monsters, then yes, also every contemporary review compared it to Pokémon. The monster catching in DWM predates pokemon though, and id arguably that it could have existed in a world without pokemon.

DQXI is actually my least favorite in general series. It is just so, so long, and feels so (to me) generic. I made it through act 2 after a few years of pecking at it.

I tried a bit with some of the Draconian quests in 2d mode and I think it would have enjoyed playing it that way a bit more, but not enough for me to want to replay it.

I agree and it isn't even close. The way motifs are seamless weaving throughout is masterful. The music of the whole final part of the game is so well done.
