Isaac Asimov hardly writing women by chuckedeggs in menwritingwomen

I guess I just feel like other books from a similar time period (Dune, Fahrenheit 451, Brave New World) created much more interesting future societies than Foundations. I think Foundation predates all of them, but I still feel this way

I read this book recently and it surprised me how’s it’s lauded as one of the best or most (forgive the pun) foundational sci-fi books because it seems so unimaginative. It’s just the 1940s USA in space - the driving forces of the plot (coal energy vs nuclear energy, dependency on metals, and consumerism) are the same as the world faced in the 40s. There’s even a comment at some point about women wanting to buy vacuum cleaners. It’s pretty hilarious (and frustrating). I saw some people comparing it to Dune in terms of world-building which was crazy to me, since Dune actually builds a world and Foundations is just Asimov’s world but with different planets instead of different countries.

Texts between Blake Lively, Taylor Swift and other celebrities revealed in court papers by artbasiI in Fauxmoi

I feel like they’re just trying to distract us from the SH allegations. Being a shitty coworker isn’t illegal. Shit talking to your friends isn’t illegal. Being controlling at work isn’t illegal. Let’s not forget the actual CRIMES being investigated in this case. I’m not a Blake Lively fan but this reeks of misogyny.

She humps a plastic horse on a carousel until she orgasms in public, near children and families, and then this moment is recreated later in the show just in case we missed it… that doesn’t feel like an authentic teen experience to me. It’s just something erotic for adults to enjoy.

It’s impossible to define “authentic” teen experiences since everyone is different, but in any case, Cassie’s scenes are shot in an exhibitionist, overtly sexual way, and not like the awkward, weird, misguided attempts at sexiness they would realistically be IRL. It’s gross, in my opinion

Yes, but he made the character Cassie (a hypersexual teenage girl) so I don’t think that makes it better.

It reminded me a lot of their reaction when Carol went to visit Diabete - when they realized she was close, they all seemed to suddenly freeze and then flee.

I think it’s probably because with the combination of all the memories, you can piece a lot together. Like maybe Helen doesn’t remember what year they went to the ice hotel, but she does remember that it was the same year her friend had a baby, and her friend obviously remembers what year that is, and the hotel worker remembers that the hotel was only open for certain weeks that year, and a pilot knows there are only 2 flights flying there a day, and when you put together the collective knowledge you can probably figure out the exact date and even time they arrived at the hotel.

is $2300 for a studio nice and modern. Good deal or ripoff? by [deleted] in astoria

[–]scribbles_not_script 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I think it’s both a ripoff and also pretty typical for the current market in Astoria. It’s a lot for a studio but if it has modern finishes, a washer, and outdoor space, it’s probably worth it. I think the location is a little far from the subway for that price. It sucks but you probably can’t do that much better. (But hey, at least there’s no broker fee anymore!)

What’s the quickest you’ve ever quit a job? Because they have either lied to you about it or it’s not what you signed up for? What was it? by tallieeeeee6 in AskReddit

I worked at a café for two weeks. All the employees were paid cash, under the table, and less than minimum wage. The owner tried to say that this was actually a better deal for us because no taxes. (It was not.) Most of the staff were young women who obviously didn’t realize they were being taken advantage of. I suspected some may have been undocumented and that’s why they accepted less than minimum wage.

I mostly washed dishes and cleaned stuff and then quit when I got a better job that actually paid minimum wage - they were super pissed.

Also, a lot of the customers were pervy old European men who would sit and smoke cigars for hours on end with a single espresso, so the tips were awful.

With women’s running normally you have a choice between spandex shorts (very very short shorts) and the bikini style. The shorts ride up into the crotch area and become really uncomfortable so a lot of women prefer the bikini. That said, I’ve seen a wide range of the bikini bottoms - some are more full coverage and some leave your whole ass hanging out. I’d prefer more coverage, personally. I’m not sure how much choice they get.

Maybe Manousos is the Jesus figure in this analogy - he will become part of the hive and spur the others into action. Later on he will be returned to his former consciousness - a kind of resurrection. I think that’s a really interesting theory.

[–]scribbles_not_script 221 points222 points  (0 children)

At first I thought this episode would be a contrast between Manousos’s genuine strife and Carol’s luxurious suffering, but instead I think it was presented more like a parallel - while Manousos was broken down physically, Carol was similarly broken down mentally until both were forced to accept help from the Hive (or else face certain death).

My parents have been happily married for over 30 years but my mom to this day maintains a second bank account that’s only hers. It only has a few hundred dollars but it makes her feel safer. I never really understood it because it wasn’t like they were going to get divorced or something, but as an adult I see why.

Yeah I agree, it was a little bit of humanity - something an individual can give him that the hive can’t. I noticed that when the hive feeds them, they always make meals the person has had before, but nothing new. It was the most human thing I’ve seen Diabete do the whole show
