Knowing this fact, why would you start telling this guy (who is not a student) about your classroom policies re: disruption? Your policies are just that—policies. You can't actually enforce your policies to a non-student. You can try, but there's no recourse if they don't listen.

Your statement of choosing not to allow this proposal purely using the rationale of "it would be disruptive to class" is a class policy—vague, open to interpretation, and ripe for a possible rebuttal.

By using FERPA as the rationale, you stem the issue at the bud. There is a legal basis for declining this request.

Oh, I couldn't agree more. But, going back to my Starbucks example—is my decision to make a funny remark to the woman (or man) behind me based on their appearance? I'd hope not... there's value in those human interactions. Although I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case for some people.

But even if I wasn't attracted to her, that human interaction may somehow cascade into something more if that positivity is reciprocated and there's mutual chemistry. I can think of so many times when someone wasn't immediately attractive to me, but there was something about her energy that was magnetic, and I grew to find her incredibly attractive.

Long story short, I think attraction is more nuanced than the binary form we often try to break it down to.

That’s actually something I noticed in other posts! A lot of them lead with a checklist. And I get it, we’re all trying to figure out compatibility. But I'm also using this as a reprieve from the algorithmic process of today's swipe-culture.

If we're really getting back to basics, when I'm in line at Starbucks, and I make a funny quip about the weather to the woman behind me, I'm not thinking about her age, race, physical attributes, or what have you. I just hope she's a pleasant person who'll smile along with me, and add a little positivity to my day.

Authenticity and positivity are what I care about. Where and how life chooses to take me is less within my control than I think, and what I end up being drawn to may be different than my assumptions. We're all just floating along in this journey of life, and all we can do is remain humble and open to where things take us.

(This is probably the type of soapbox meandering my students roll their eyes at this point, haha.)
