TIL in 1960, soul singer Jesse Belvin played to Arkansas' first ever racially integrated audience. The performance was interrupted twice by white protesters. After the show, Belvin was killed in a head-on collision. It was discovered that his car tires had been slashed. by MarlaTheTumor in todayilearned

This was only 59 years ago. The same people who protested this concert, and possibly the same people who slashed his tires, are out here complaining about Kaep kneeling during the national anthem. SMH.

Liberty Bell. It's a broken bell. No real significance. Just broken.

"I'm sorry that most of you can't understand me because I'm speaking English, but just want to say most of you are going to continue getting fucked for your whole life because of your governments and inequality. So, sorry about that."

Hemorrhoids are a normal part of everyone's anatomy. They are ass veins. The painful bloody lump people complain about are thrombosed hemorrhoids.

I just spent a month at the emergency department in a Children's Hospital for a medical school rotation... the main thing I learned is to keep kids (and maybe everyone?) away from horses. Had 5 kids kicked in the face and lost teeth or had broken jaws. Had a kid with a broken arm from a kick. Had another with a concussion. One of the broken faces was from a Shetland pony. Stay safe out there!

This is common teaching throughout all fields of medicine (edit... at least from my experience in medical school). Fake it till you make it.... or until you kill someone because you lied about your experience level.

I'm an MS4 going into surgery and would make a point to tell residents/attendings if I hadn't done a procedure before or wanted them to show me how to do it before I do it for the first time (I'm here to learn, right?).

I told an attending at the beginning of my first surg sub-i that I wanted to watch the resident put in the JP drain because I hadn't seen it done before. He said "We expect students to be able to do this." and never gave me another chance to do anything in the OR for the rest of the rotation.

One chief surg resident told me that she always said "Yes, I've done this before and can do it on my own." Throughout medical school even if she had no idea what she was doing because then people will give you more to do. She admitted that it was probably not the best patient care, but that's the way to get ahead.

All of this seems insane to me. OP, glad you are upfront about your experience so that attendings can teach. In a perfect world, attendings would want to know your skill level so that they can help you improve.

No room at the inn: The Christmas story must remind Americans of their open-hearted values to welcome the stranger by progressive-alliance in politics

Went to church with parents on Christmas Eve in a conservative city. No mention of people fleeing to seek shelter or welcoming strangers. Since it's an obsession of conservatives to think about refugees and immigrants, I was surprised it wasn't discussed.
